Worse. A small child. That's a scary thing. We installed a bar lock on the top of all our patio doors for this very reason. Plus it adds break in security.

I think he's going to have to (take the screen into a shop and have them) change out the lock mechanism to something new.

I used a child gates a lot when my kids were small. also, sometimes it's best to just close the door and turn on the AC instead of taking a chance on a screen door keeping a child inside.

Those locks suck any way. At least do what baby Lee said and stick a broom handle in there, though it's better to have the bar on top where you know the kid can't get to it.

Looking up door hardware terminology, that specific piece may be a "keeper."
This is the closest thing I found, but it's both discontinued and too large based on your pic. Google image searches return things somewhat similar to your part, but not exactly the same. In terms of online research, your last resort may be to unscrew it and take pictures of it from different angles, upload them and do a reverse image search. Or, just broomstick the track. |

Can you take it off and go to Home Depot, see if they have anything that will work?

I may have to go the bar lock route or look into just getting a new screen door installed. This is because of a little one who is starting to learn to open the screen. With the nice cool weather we've had here lately we've had the doors open a lot so I need to try to get this one solved. I'm not big on the broom stick idea as I see that just becoming a new toy that would get carried around. Tried taking it to HD once, but couldn't track anything down on my own and the only employees I found that day were idiots.

Take the part off of thr frame and see if there is a manufacturer proof mark stamped/molded into th the side that is mounted against the doorframe.

Take the lock to Lowes. They should have something. You can also go to one of the "Glass" houses in your area as most do replacement doors. It's going to be a little tough, because most of them mainly deal in commercial applications and your door being residential. I'm actaully a PM for a commercial door company, but I looked into our hardware and we don't have a keeper like that.
Even if Lowes doesn't have that part, they should have some replacement hardware for your screens.
