According to the Star today he is. Dunta to the bench. Flowers seems cool with it.

Flowers will slide from the strong side into the slot I would imagine, leaving a space. Cooper would still be the nickel CB, just won't play it in the slot.

EDIT: I'll add that they might be starting Cooper while Flowers' knee is healing

I'll take Cooper at $400k versus Carr at $10,000,000 per.
I dunno, I've seen Lewis just flat avoid too many tackles at this point to merely put a 'could be upgraded' tag on him.

There has to be a middle ground there doesn't there? It's not as though upgrading the FS position was as critical as upgrading the #2 CB was last offseason, but as long as Lewis is back there dodging ballcarriers, there's a ceiling on the defense.

I'd still be curious to see Robinson out there, but I don't think he understands the coverages well enough to start. Lewis has a lot of 'read' responsibilities and I can't see Robinson getting any of those right. I also don't really want to put more on Berry's plate and risk pulling him out of the groove he's in right now.

No they didn't. He got a start the week before when Flowers was out. Dunta got one then too because we apparently started 3 CBs.

Edit: In fact, they gave 3 safeties a start in that Giants game too (Berry, Lewis, and Demps).

The Star just pointed out that Robinson had 0 defensive snaps against Tennessee. Cooper and Smith played outside, and Flowers played inside. All beasted.

What about Abdullah?

Do you feel it's worth trading away picks to acquire his replacement or spending our top pick next year on drafting him?

I'm not there. If we can find someone on our roster or the waiver wire, great. I can't justify allocating our limited resources towards a secondary that is exceptional at 4 of 5 spots.

I agree. You can't expect to have superstars who have no flaws at every position. Upgrade Lewis if you can, but use your high draft picks and cap space to focus on better upgrade opportunities at positions of greater need.

Let's stipulate that PFF isn't the final word on performance. That said, Abdullah has a pretty positive PFF rating across the board. His overall rating is better than Lewis despite having only 40% of the snaps. Lewis is rated quite a bit higher in coverage, but both are in solidly positive territory. Abdullah's run defense is significantly better than Lewis who has a pretty terrible rating.

Does Abdullah generally play the SS position?

We are in the zone in terms of plugging in JAGs and watching them flourish. Might as well give Abdullah a shot if Lewis is really that big of a liability.
