The Washington Redskins is a privately owned business – According to Forbes, the Redskins are worth $1.7 billion - $131 million of the Redskins valuation is in brand strength. Dan Snyder, who has publicly defended the name, proclaimed the Redskins name is not going anywhere.

Meanwhile, Bob Costas uses NBC’s Sunday night football game as a platform to criticize the Redskins name as an ‘insult’ and ‘slur’ after earlier in the month President Obama suggests the franchise consider a name change.

Political opinions have no place in sports. Additionally, privately owned businesses do not have to change their brand for politically correct reasons.

On a side note: The Iraqi people find President Obama’s middle name “Hussein” offensive. It is hard to find a more fitting discussion.
