Anyone else been following this story? They had a pretty graphic show on nightline about it last night.

Refusing to accept the explanation of Toyota and the federal government, hundreds of Toyota owners are in rebellion after a series of accidents caused by what they call "runaway cars."

Department of Transportation: underlying defect causes accelerators to stick.

More PhotosSafety analysts found an estimated 2000 cases in which owners of Toyota cars including Camry, Prius and Lexus, reported that their cars surged without warning up to speeds of 100 miles per hour.

Toyota says the incidents are caused by floor mats becoming stuck under gas pedals, but owners say that's not what happened to them.

"I'm absolutely certain that in my situation, it was not the floor mats," Elizabeth James told ABC News. She was driving her Toyota Prius outside Denver, CO when she says it suddenly shot up to 90 miles an hour, even though her foot was on the brake and not the gas pedal.

"I kept going faster and faster," James said. "And all of a sudden… my foot was pressing on the brake super, super hard and I wasn't slowing down."

James and some other Toyota owners suspect the accidents have been caused by some kind of glitch in the electronic computer system used in Toyotas that controls the throttle.

The 30 seconds was honestly a gross overestimation.

Look at the Edmund's link earlier in the thread. The Camry's normal 60-0 braking distance is 120 feet. With full throttle the whole time, the 60-0 braking distance was 129 feet.

Justice Department Reaches $1 Billion Agreement With Toyota
The Justice Department has reached a $1 billion agreement with Toyota to resolve concerns over how the company responded to consumer complaints about rapid acceleration in some models five years ago, federal officials confirmed to NBC News Tuesday.

The deal is set to be announced as early as Wednesday in Washington by Attorney General Eric Holder, provided the final details are worked out, said officials familiar with the outlines of the agreement.

Toyota would agree to pay just over a billion dollars and, in return for certain commitments by the company, the Justice Department would defer prosecution.

Such agreements are common in cases like this: The company essentially agrees to conform its behavior to the settlement terms. And if it continues to do so, the government will not prosecute.

The Justice Department and the FBI were investigating whether Toyota initially misled federal safety regulators after the problems were first noticed in 2009.

While not confirming any settlement, Toyota issued this statement tonight:

"Toyota has cooperated with the U.S. Attorney's office in this matter for more than four years. During that time, we have made fundamental changes to become a more responsive and customer-focused organization, and we are committed to continued improvements."

I watched the videos from the first page, and I'm unsure how that trooper couldn't stop the car. (Or slow it down at the very least.) Throw it in neutral, turn off the car, etc.

If I got a speeding ticket and incurred a fine of 0.4% of my annual income (i.e. revenue), sure I'd be angry, and I'd probably consider that a big deal.
