KISSTORY
Seems you cant look at Yahoo these days without seeing atleast one story about KISS... stuff about the Rock HOF, links to a huge Rolling Stone article etc.

It got my juices flowing for all things KISS, spent a good bit of last night watching concerts and clips, it all reminded just how freakin cool these guys were... they are directly responsible for my love of rock n roll and I'm far from alone, everyone from Garth Brooks to Pearl Jam (Mike McCreadys solo on Alive is aped from Ace Frehleys solo on She) consider them huge influences.

Its a disgrace that it took them this long to get into the Hall... they've sold more albums than The Who, Van Halen and The Doors, among many others.

The Doors weren't all the influential. Great band but didn't inspire too many others to continue expanding on the genre.

As for the Who, there's probably a half dozen bands from the same scene in England that were more influential, let alone in rock history. The biggest contribution they made was when Pete Townsend discovered Hendrix.

It's been discussed here before. Everybody loves to bag on KISS. They brought a lot of it on themselves. But when it comes right down to it, about the only band that gets mentioned more when the "influence" question comes up is the Beatles. Scott free is 100% right.

I love that New York Groove song...never even realized it was KISS until they played it on that Tattoo show opening a few years back.

Love KISS, not highbrow, but it's a lot of fun. Even their 80s hair metal stuff I like.

I've listened to the albums. I own some of them. I know they were ****ing huge--and a huge part of that was the image.

I have zero hate for KISS, good for them. I don't know if you can really compare them to stuff like The Who though. Just a different thing, tough to compare. I think The Who belongs up there with the Beatles, Beach Boys, etc. If for nothing else writing "Tommy," but there's a million other reasons. It's all subjective though.

That's just not true. The theatrics were a big influence, yes. But the band, due to exposure and marketing, were just huge.

Musically, I wouldn't put them in the same sentence with VH or AC/DC, no.

Buy when you read/see interview after interview with musicians who say the first album they bought with their own money was "destroyer" and the first concert they went to was KISS, the level of influence is undeniable.

You're talking about musicianship and artistic contribution, not influence.

"Tommy" is a masterpiece. Nothing KISS did comes close. But millions of budding musicians didn't ever say "I want to do THAT".

Kids saw the makeup and explosions and said, "I want to be a rock star." If that's the kind of influence you and scot are talking about, then fine. But as far as an influence on MUSIC? No. Did those kids grow up and think, I want to make MUSIC like KISS? I don't think so.
