and besides, Eli and the Giants still had to score a TD in a 14-10 game after Williams muffed that punt...it's not like the special teams scored that TD.

ALEX SMITH WAS NEVER A MUFFED PUNT AWAY FROM A SUPER BOWL...

and if you truly do think that, then you clearly don't know much about the NFL

Saying Kyle Williams lost the game because he muffed a punt with 10+ minutes left in a football game is hilariously ignorant.

The fact of the matter is, Eli threw a TD pass. The 49ers tied it.

And then both teams had 4 drives to win the game, Alex and the offense produced zero first downs in 4 straight drives in a tied game deep into the 4th + overtime...

at no point in Alex Smith's career was he ever A MUFFED PUNT AWAY from a Super Bowl.

If you think that, you are dumb. It's really that simple.

Funny, I remember being in Lucas Oil Stadium in January telling Monte that the Colts couldn't move the ball...

And that was a 28 point game.

Not a 4 point game with a ton of time left.

Alex had several chances to step up and win that game.

The giants didn't move the ball past the 50 yard line in the second half without the help of the 49er special teams. The td that manning threw was on two back up players because dashon goldson had killed tarrell Brown knocking both of them out. Leaving tramaine brock and Reggie Smith back there. Fine hootie. You win.

It's not about winning.

It's just fact.

I like Alex Smith.

But I'm not going to lie or pretend that he was ever a muffed punt away from a Super Bowl. That's not even revisionist history. That's just a blatant lie/myth/whatever you want to call it.

He had 4 independent chances to go to the Super Bowl and never produced a single first down.

Again, against that pass rush the odds were stacked against him. They made Tom Brady look the same way a few years before that on a big stage.

But please stop "misremembering" that game. That's not how it ever happened.

Kyle Williams did lose that game for San Fran.

Alex Smith's fault. What hootie says is true. Alex didn't make the plays to win the game.

There are enough people who were on Twitter threatening to kill Kyle Williams that support at least a little bit that I can't be misremembering that bad.

Fair enough. But I am right =)

I watched that game before Smith was ever a Chief and I was pretty appalled by both Eli and Alex that game for their lack of "clutchness" in all honesty.

Neither team wanted to win that day, or so it seemed...but Kyle Williams and Larry Tynes finally took care of it.

you're certainly right about Kyle Williams...

he was the DIRECT reason the 49ers lost. 100%. I don't think anyone would ever argue that.

The only thing I was correcting was the myth that Alex Smith was a muffed punt away from going to the Super Bowl.

He was a muffed punt away from getting another chance at leading a drive to get to the Super Bowl.

That game was a mess. The conditions were bad and the offense was bad and the 49ers luck was terrible.

Credit does go to Tom Coughlin and his D coaches.

And the refs. Eli had 58 pass attempts and ZERO calls for holding.

Harbaugh and his OC also really bungled the game. There was 1 gimmick play that was botched almost into a fumble. Probably scared them from trying something that was obviously needed in retrospect.

49ers had 15 drives. Frank Gore had 16 rushes.

Crabtree was pathetic and being shadowed by the likes of Chase Blackburn.

Smith did miss chances to Kyle Williams and Delanie Walker but they hadn't exactly been a big part of the offense all season. 1 was the 4th option behind Ted Ginn who was hurt and the other hadn't caught a pass in 2 months.
Brett Swain was WR3.

What a strange year that was. Like KC last season.
The season changing moment was a ball hitting Kyle Williams knee by a few inches. And Bowe's foot only inches out of bounds.

And then 2012 is just short when Kaepernick fails to get that goal line TD.
And then 2013 is he implodes in the 4th quarter.

If it doesn't happen in 2014 I won't say never win but I think this is it for the current setup. If the staff is too stupid to adjust from the Andrew Luck type offense when the QB they picked is not that type they need to be fired.
Or if Kaepernick fails to develop they aren't going to win unless a crazy Flacco streak happens.

Not only alex smiff. But so did Andy Reid. Such a colossal fail. I think i read somewhere that he call 26 pass plays to 9 runs while trying to protect his lead.

Andy reid is marty/herm level of stupid.

Oh, ok. In a game decided by 3 points in OT, 10 of those points directly came after two Kyle Wiliams muffed special teams plays and yet you're blaming the the QB who had 2TDs 0INT 90QBR and was missing three out of the top four wideouts from the start of the year. Okay. You're not even worth arguing with. You just aren't.
