Stupid rule. NFL opened the box when they re-allowed WRs to wear 10-19.

Chiefs running back De'Anthony Thomas receiving instruction as a receiver
BY TEREZ A. PAYLORTHE KANSAS CITY STAR 08/10/2014 3:49 PM 08/10/2014 3:49 PM Chiefs rookie De'Anthony Thomas has spent most of his time in training camp as a running back, but he also has been receiving a little extra tutelage at receiver courtesy of assistant coach Brad Childress. During practice, Childress — who is the team's spread-game analyst and is in charge of special projects — can often be seen giving the speedy 5-foot-9, 174-pound Thomas tips on the finer points of receiving. Chiefs coach Andy Reid said Childress is simply doing what he was hired to do. Thomas comes from a spread offense at Oregon and often lines up as a running back, but occasionally splits out wide in practice and has the potential to be a multi-dimensional weapon. “I'm not gonna say De'Anthony is a hybrid, but he does a lot of different things,” Reid said. “He did it in college at Oregon and he's still doing it here. Brad works with him, (receivers coach) David (Culley) works with him a little bit and E.B. (running backs coach Eric Bieniemy) works with him probably more than anybody. The kid's got a lot on his plate but he's handling it pretty well.” Read more here: http://www.kansascity.com/sports/nfl...#storylink=cpy

I think that's easier said than done. He hasn't really played WR much and you can't just throw him in there in the NFL. That's why Childress is coaching him. Maybe next year he could be the full time slot but there is no way this year. Reid just needs to find him ways to get the ball where he will be comfortable right now.

We went through this shit with McCluster.

He's not going to be a true RB. He'll be listed as a RB and we'll carry four of them. He'll be a tweener this year like McCluster was. He will never be a between the tackles guy.
Why would you want to just sit him if he is a slower learner at WR? That seems dumb to me. Also Gray looks like a lock. He's a special teams stud. West might make the practice squad or something? |

Putting him at rb allows you to keep another wr.

No it doesn't. Teams aren't limited to a certain amount of players per position. They could put him at WR and still keep 6 other WRs if they want to.

The biggest problem with Bowe last year was this is a precision timing based offense that requires excellent route running.
That's why Bowe struggled. That and a risk averse qb lead to career low numbers. Now, if Bowe is in better shape, runs better routes, he will see his numbers spike. If not, then you see what you get.

But they're only keeping a certain number at wr. Keeping him listed at rb allows another wr in the roster that can't play anything but wr, whereas Thomas can be listed at rb but be multifaceted. |

For example, they can list him at RB and keep: Bowe, Avery, Hemingway, Jenkins, Williams, and Wilson Or they can list him at WR and still keep Bowe, Avery, Hemingway, Jenkins, Williams, and Wilson. Doesn't matter what position they list him at at all. It doesn't change anything.

why list him as a RB if he is never going to be a 'between the tackles guy'. There is no rule in the NFL says you can only carry so many of a certain position. List a player where they are going to play. Why work him out with the RB's if he is not going to be a RB? Work him at the positions he is going to play Slot WR/Gadget/KR-PR You sit him instead of taking carries away from the RB's that deserve it. I don't want him taking a carry/catch away from Charles,Davis or Gray. He is slot receiver who is going to catch bubble screens, short passes and run some reverses. I just don't get it, we've been through this before. That idiot Haley wasted 2 years by putting DmC at RB and taking carries away from Charles. stupidity DaT is a gadget slot receiver, time for full speed ahead on learning that position.

Obv. it would be great if he could pan out as a receiver.
DeSean Jackson - 5'10, 178 De'Anthony Thomas - 5'10, 176 Size similarity is uncanny. If Andy can use him like they used DeSean early on, that would be awesome.

1. Is a 176lb player likely to survive at RB? No. 2. Do with need a RB? No. No point in messing around with it then. He should work with the WRs to learn every bit he can, as fast as he can.

Thomas is going to be our lead returner and third/fouth option at running back. He's got zero length (29" arms), verticality (a meager 32" vertical at the combine) and Jimmy Clausen hands (8 1/8") in addition to his eighth grader sized frame. That's not a guy you want to put out into space downfield. Putting him into that position is a recipe for disaster. However, with Albert Wilson, you've got a guy who is the same height as Thomas, but who has substantially more bulk (205 versus 175), higher vertical (37.5"), much bigger hands (9 1/8"), longer arms (30 3/8") and who is even faster (4.43 versus 4.50 40 yard dash at the Combine). Wilson is going to be your guy at the slot receiver position getting Dexter's touches. Thomas, like Ford, was drafted for their potential on special teams. |
