Late night bullshit: The Chiefs have replaced John Dorsey with you.

Congratulations. We all hate you now.

The Chiefs ended the season at 6-10. They're picking 8th overall in 2015. What do you do?

1. Do you extend Alex Smith, and to what kind of contract?

2. Do you extend Justin Houston, and to what kind of contract?

3. Do you extend Eric Berry, and to what kind of contract?

4. Here is the team's salary cap in 2015 (be sure to hit the "2015" tab). Do you cut anybody?

5. Josh Martin is a RFA. Do you tender him, and if so, to what?

6. We have the following free agents: RB Joe McKnight, FB Anthony Sherman, WR Kyle Williams, WR Junior Hemingway, OT Ryan Harris, OT J'Marcus Webb, OT/G Jeff Linkenbach, G Rishaw Johnson, C Rodney Hudson, DE Allen Bailey, OLB Dezmon Moses, CB Chris Owens, LS Thomas Gafford.

7. Here is a list of free agents. If you do the work to subtract the contracts you've cut, and added in the extensions you've signed, who would you target in free agency?

8. Who/what are you targeting in the draft?

8. I am taking BPA in the draft and staying where I am at with my first pick. I might trade back into the end of the first round later. I'm looking hard at WR and CB. We have a lot of holes to fill if we went 6-10.
Isn't the window to save money on Bowe's contract like 2 to 3 weeks from now, not after the season?

I'm not sure either, but this seems to indicate there could be an opportunity that only last a couple of more weeks.

Quote:
Bowe’s suspension could result in his depature from Chiefs, soon

The one-game suspension of Chiefs receiver Dwayne Bowe could, in hindsight, become the domino that ultimately gives the Browns a replacement for Josh Gordon.

The suspension most likely voids the remaining fully guaranteed money in Bowe’s contract: $8.75 million in 2014 and $1.5 million in 2015. It creates a window for the Chiefs to dump Bowe, avoiding more than $10 million and creating an immediate $8.75 million in 2014 cap space. (The extra cap space now would almost entirely offset the $9 million cap charge they’d take in 2015, due to the post-June 1 move.)

Unless Bowe’s contract specifically was negotiated to remove now-standard language voiding future guarantees in the event of a suspension, the Chiefs could make a move at any point after Bowe’s one-week exile begins, but before the moment that his salary becomes guaranteed as “termination pay,” a benefit for all players with four or more years of service who are on a team’s Week One roster.

If Bowe is cut, he’d become a free agent. And if Browns receiver Josh Gordon is suspended for a full year, Cleveland would have a clear need at receiver.

And Browns G.M. Ray Farmer worked for the Chiefs when Bowe was drafted. And Farmer’s advisor, Bill Kuharich, served as the V.P. of player personnel in Kansas City when the Chiefs drafted Bowe.

The Chiefs also could trade Bowe to the Browns (or anyone else), but it would make no sense for Cleveland (or anyone else) to assume the obligation to pay him $8.75 million for 2014 if they can sign him for less on the open market.

Of course, coach Mike Pettine and offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan would have to believe that Bowe could learn Shanahan’s offense. But both Cleveland and Kansas City rely on West Coast-style offenses, making the potential transition easier.

Regardless of where Bowe ends up, the suspension gives the Chiefs the opportunity to block more than $10 million that currently is fully guaranteed to him. If they choose to do so, Bowe’s most obvious next destination would become Cleveland.

1. I extend Alex Smith, either for three years guaranteed at whatever rate he wants ($18m a year?), or I sign him for five years at whatever rate he wants so long as I have a Kaepernick/Dalton option that can bail me out at any time. Since he will likely refuse, I will part ways with him and take my shot(s) in the Draft. The compensatory picks allow me ample ammunition to jump up five-to-seven spots for a franchise QB if I fall in love with one. Good luck with the Texans in 2015, Alex.

2. I will likely have to franchise Justin Houston. But I will offer him about $10m a year if he has a similar year to last year.

3. I sign Eric Berry to an identical deal that Earl Thomas signed. It's overpayment for his services, but Berry must be locked up.

3. I cut Chase Daniel, Anthony Fasano, and Sean Smith. I would love to cut Donnie Avery, but my hands are tied there with no talent at the WR position.

4. I put Tamba Hali on the trading block, since he will almost certainly not accept a downgrade in pay. I'm betting the Falcons trade a 2015 2nd and a 2016 3rd for him, thanks to his Pioli connection. That gives me a 1st, 2 2nds, 2 3rds (comp pick), 2 4ths (comp pick), 2 5ths (comp pick), and 2 6ths (comp pick), and a 7th. Plenty of ammo to go get the QB of Andy Reid's choice atop the draft.

I think we'd all take a (likely less potent) combo of Houston/Ford instead of Houston/Hali if it meant we got Mariota instead of Alex Smith.

5. I put a 6th round tender on Josh Martin.

6. Of the departing free agents, I will re-sign: Sherman, Bailey, Owens (unless he blows this year), and Gafford.

7. Since we've let Alex Smith walk, cut Sean Smith and traded Hali, the Chiefs will have about $20m to play with.

If the Chargers fail to re-sign OT King Dunlap, I make a very aggressive run at him. If Eric Fisher has to play swing tackle or guard in 2015, so ****ing be it. This is all very unlikely, however, and I'm willing to give Eric Fisher another season at LT unless (a.) he doesn't improve over the course of 2014, or (b.) a surefire tackle like Dunlap comes available.

Assuming Dunlap doesn't hit the market, I go for the best WR on the market. At this point, the WR market for 2015 seems downright pathetic. I think the Eagles are moving away from Jeremy Maclin, so the Chiefs should make a medium-sized investment there and keep trying to stack the WR corps in the draft, if they have any ammunition left after moving up for a QB.

If Darrell Revis escapes New England next year, screw everything I just said and sell out for him.

8. In the Draft, I try to move up from #8 to #3 and take the QB Andy Reid most believes in. I'll trade away my 1st, one of my 2nds, one of my 3rds, and next year's 1st to do so.

For the rest of the draft, I put CB as my priority if we can't land Revis, and then WR or OL next if we can't land an impact free agent there, either.

Nice job Direckshun. I really thought about Revis as well. I didn't really explain but I am thinking Tamba would take a pay cut as long as he got more guaranteed money.

I don't want to give Hali more guaranteed money. I just want to give him more years. Keep him a lifelong Chief for less money.

If he takes that, we've got a deal. If not, it's off to the Falcons with you.

Are there any good QB's in next years draft? Mariotta? Hundley?

It's currently shaping up as a somewhat average class. Not stupendous, not terrible.

Potentially two elite, Top 5 options.

I'd jack off every night if we draft Marcus Mariota.

IMO he's going to be at LEAST as good as Colin Kaepernick.

I'd trade Charles in order to move up to get him.

Plus we will have that 1st, which we'll finally use on the elite QB prospect this franchise has been starving for.
