Amazon announces Fire TV
http://sourcefed.com/amazon-announces-fire-tv/
Amazon has dove in head first into video hardware, announcing it’s new set-top device: Amazon Fire TV. Clearly a competitor for Apple TV and Roku, the $99 device is an internet-connected set-top box which uses voice commands that you speak into its remote control. It will also serve as a gaming console, and consumers have the option to purchase a separate $39 controller that is paired with the box. Amazon has claimed the device is 3 times more powerful than Apple TV and is based on Android and HTML 5, which means it should be easy for companies to bring their apps over to the platform. It supports Hulu Plus, Netflix, Pandora, Youtube, Crackle, iHeartRadio and Vevo. Sadly, HBO Go and Vudu are not supported. Fire TV also has a predictive engine called “ASAP,” which pre-loads content it thinks you are going to watch, so it can start without any buffering or load time. This feature learns over time and gets better at suggesting content you like. In a prior announcement made this weekend, Amazon said it will be turning six shows from its Amazon Originals program into a full series. The shows, which were selected after viewer feedback from the pilot episodes, include ’The After’, ‘Bosch, Gortimer Gibbon’s Life on Normal Street’, ‘Mozart in the Jungle’, ‘Transparent’ and ’Wishenpoof’. Amazon also renewed ’Alpha House’ — starring John Goodman — for a second season. As far as gaming is concerned, the console will offer titles such as “Minecraft” and “The Walking Dead”. Many of the titles will be free or cost a little as $1.85 to play. |

So is the box or the stick a better option at this point?

I'm sure the box offers things the stick can't but I really like the stick. So far it's been perfect and it was EASY to take on the road. I only did it to see if it would work, and dam it was awesome...

There are different levels of root on an Android device. There's root in the OS, which is possible with older FireTVs, and allows free access to all FireOS settings, and installing apps that have access to features otherwise not available due to the permissions of the OS. Then there's a lower level of root access, that gives you access to the bootloader itself. Which would almost be equivalent to BIOS on a PC. At that point, you're no longer confined to the FireOS. You could install other OSes as long as the hardware is capable of it. Like vanilla Android builds. It makes quite a bit possible that wasn't before..

Box has much better hardware than the Stick. But the Stick does a pretty good job too.

Yep. I personally am not a fan of wireless only for streaming video, so I am decidedly in the box camp. For the 84 dollar sale price they do it seems every other week, it is a hell of a deal. Now with bootcamp, there is no way anyone can convince me one of those chinese imported boxes make a better Kodi media player.

In theory, this should allow an exploit that would give root on any FireTV regardless of firmware version. That could make this box even more popular that it already is....

By the time I get done getting either AT&T GigaPower, or Google Fiber, I'm going to need more plugs and outlets!
Let's hope with Google fiver it's just one Google box, then an Ooma box. I already have the DTAs from TimeWarner all over the house (and I'm too lazy to find out if I really need them quite yet!!), so that's a wash. But I really hope things get simpler when/if I can pull all those other boxes out. |

So what's everyone using for a sports add-on for Kodi? Just got set up yesterday. Having trouble getting live cable and sports channels.

For sports, I'd definitely go with SportsDevil (or DigiTele or whatever they want to call it now). In my experience, there aren't many ways to get it via conventional methods, so you'll have to sideload it via a zipfile. There are a few posts here with the link.

So I pulled the trigger and got one about a month ago. It's ****ing awesome. Not having to root and being able to sideload basically anything I needed (specifically XBMC) was a no-brainer for me. I bought another one a week after I got the first one. I'm super impressed thus far.

Ohh hell yeah. This just improved the FireTV dramatically. Native USB support, wireless bluetooth headphone support, menu customization, etc.
Amazon announces list of new Fire TV features — USB storage, Bluetooth Audio, Shortcuts Menu, and more Amazon has today officially announced and acknowledged the upcoming Fire TV and Fire TV Stick update. My sources were spot on with their information about the upcoming addition of USB storage and Bluetooth audio support. Read on for a full list of what Amazon says is included in the next software update, plus a few features not on their list that I can now reveal. [...]
