Royals worth $700M according to Forbes

http://espn.go.com/mlb/story/_/id/12...orbes-magazine

...which means Glass could surely sell the Royals for $1B (minimum)

which means Glass ROI is INSANE

which means we should never hear this asshole ever tell us "we don't have the $$$" again. So far he's off to a good start.

I could be wrong, but I think hes talking about over the long haul, when some of these first contracts expire.

Well if he wants to keep the team intact long-term, he probably needs to spend more...a lot more.

I don't have any qualms with what Glass did this year, to be honest. I think he actually authorized some overspending on Rios and Morales and I think he got a solid deal on Volquez.

I'm speaking generally, however. If you're a team that's not winning and it takes operating losses to become a contender/champion - I think a lot of these guys would go ahead and take them. It's just the competitive side of them.

Then again, it appears the businessman side of them wins out more often than I would have expected.

Jerry Jones is the 'apex' owner for this phenomena. If the Cowboys lost him $100 million/yr he would give precisely zero ****s, IMO. He'd keep writing huge checks and building extravagant stadiums. Cuban is a guy like that as well. Prokharov (Nets owner) is like that. These are guys that simply get off on owning sports teams and don't really care if they lose money on them.

They haven't let someone walk because of money since Beltran, and that was 12 years ago now. How long do you hang onto that? People go a little nuts over the payroll number. You're better off spending 80M intelligently over spending 120M poorly.

I don't think they're going to re-sign Hosmer though. I think he's just going to cost too much. Even at 700M, they're the 3rd least valuable team in MLB. Half the teams are worth a billion dollars now. That's amazing. And that doesn't even get into the Royals' disaster of a TV contract. Yeah the team's worth more, but that list doesn't make them look rich compared to the rest of the league.

I'm pretty ignorant when it comes to financial stuff beyond payroll, but would that 3rd-worst value have more to do with the team's failures over the last 20 years (last year notwithstanding) or just KC being a smaller market?

Probably both.

Regardless of all these numbers, the big killer is the TV deal. The Royals are locked in a $20M/year TV contract through 2019, meanwhile the local TV money has taken off. For instance, the Diamondbacks got a $1.5 billion-plus dollar TV contract this offseason. That'll probably give them about 80M a year. Even winning a World Series isn't going to make up that difference. Other teams are going to have a 40-50M head start before selling a ticket. So yeah Glass has made a ton of money, but so has everyone else.

We've let James Shields and Ervin Santana walk in the past two years.

That Diamond Back contract is insane. Everyone is from somewhere else here. I only watch when they play the Royals. More Cubs fans here than anything. Plenty of Dodger fans too.

I don't see AZ as a 'big' market team. Big city sure but I'd like to see the viewership numbers. DB's suck, and will continue to do so. It can be argued that the spending Colangelo did to win his ring has royally dorked the DB's. Still.

When it gets to 2017 and 2018, I think its fair to hope/ask that the Royals go ahead and lose a little money for one or two years around 2019 if they need to, with the understanding that we know for a fact that we're getting a big bump once our crappy TV contract expires so we'll quickly make up for that short term operating loss. A new local TV deal is still not going to let us break even at $200MM in 2020, unless the already sky-high value of live sports goes up even higher by then.
