Teaching a 15 year old to drive...

We just made it out of the driveway and no more than 200 yards down the road before I had to stop and drive home. In that 200 yards my daughter almost hit a parked car and almost went into someone's yard. To be fair the only thing I have for her to learn in is a nice F150 that Ive put some money into making fast but holy shit I dont think I can do that again. I think it also scared her out of wanting to try again for awhile at least.

I just looked into that, cheapest one in Springfield I can find that gives her 6 hours behind the wheel is $330.

I'll second the parking lot thing. But really, with video games and...common sense, I'd expect most people to pick up driving pretty quickly, or at least not hit parked cars.

Also, if its possible I'd suggest teaching her to drive a stick (no pun intended), from what I hear it is a lot more difficult to learn that after learning to drive an automatic. Plus its more fun anyway.

Give her $20 and a ride to the arcade to play Need for Speed.

I'd sure think that learning to drive an automatic would be easier. I'd rather see a new driver concentrating on things like stop lights and pedestrians than on shifting.

I learned to drive on an automatic and didn't drive a stick until I bought a car with one at age 21 or so. A day or two of hopping and bouncing and I was fine. But I fear that it would have been a different story at 16.

My father gave me my first driving lesson by finding a very steep parking lot over by Corporate Woods. He parked on a steep incline, pulled on the hand brake, looked at me and said, "ready for your first lesson?" I was 13, IIRC.

Heh, mines 15 also and I'm having horrible thoughts about her driving. She's blind as a bat without glasses and for some reason I fear they will fall off her face while she's going 70 or 20 or any speed. She has driven around the Hog barns and down a couple dirt roads a year ago and did quite well. And that was in a Ram 3500.

Make her drive Go-Carts and Riding Lawn Mowers first, then a real car in a parking lot.

first thing you want the learning driver to do is get a comfortable feel for handling the car without having to worrying about a bunch of other stuff.

find the biggest, empty parking lot you can and then just let them drive around in circles and stuff. Stop, start, back up do figure 8's ... whatever.

It will make it 100x easier when you put them out on an road.

Dont you have a lawn to mow?
@ the fact that you let a 15 year old's self-assessment of her driving skill determine that you let her have her first try on a public road.

And no. I pay people with your intellectual capability to cut it for me.
