311's version isn't better unless you like reggae infused remakes of songs. It also completely removes the desperate tone of the original song that implies how ****ED UP the speaker is without this person and that she seems to be drawing further away from him. The 311 version turns it into a sweet little love song. The original is something much more interesting.



The tone of vocal passage at about 2:30 really creates the song, imo. You can completely hear the desperation to keep the madness at bay and the madness sort of lurking at the edge of the voice. It's ****ing masterful.

IIRC, Pop Up Video put this into one of their episodes, and one of the bubbles mentioned that Robert filmed the director of the video doing mundane things, like eating lunch, and it really freaked him out.
