Old School Video Games

I recently bought Twisted Metal 2 (pic below) for the original playstation on Amazon to get down on some nostalgia gaming. It got me wondering...what other old school games have I completely forgotten about.

What are some gems from the old school days that you guys enjoyed?

For the purpose of the thread, we'll call anything prior to the 360/PS3 gen old school.

that is what I did. keep an eye on craigslist for old arcade machines. The premade ones are over priced and I dont have enough wood working skills to build my own. I grabbed an old non working arcade for $75. I ripped out the guts and put an LCD monitor in it and my wife's old XP computer. I recommend building your own controls for it. As the premade ones are junk or overpriced.

What is funny, Old 8 bit and 16 bit games look way better than I remember, but holy shit does the N64 look awful. No one had any idea how to make 3D plygons look good back then.

I've contemplated building a MAME cabinet...just love the old school ones so much and still have a few on my list that I want.

I've done both......built a mame cabinet out of an arcade cab and wired joysticks/buttons,etc.......and built a mame from a pre-fabricated/put it together cabinet.

The arcade cabinet had to go....as it weighed a billion pounds and was nearly impossible to move if needed.

SO - bought one of the pre-fab ones from recroommasters.com I think their prices went up a tad recently, as I bought a cab that fits a 27" monitor for around 5-600 bucks a couple years ago.

They are now around 700 - but they are really nice - pretty damn easy to put together....and you have tons of options for marquee, bezel, controller (x-arcade or others), and side-panel artwork. And it's quite a bit less weight than most arcade cabs.

The problems with authentic arcade cabs are:

1) weight
2) most are not in good shape - and the ones that are, you're going to pay 400-1,000 bucks for, depending upon the cab/popularity of it.
3) many dont come with joysticks/buttons - and buying new ones and wiring is a bear

I popped a windows 8 Core i5 in my pre-fab cab, using tankstick with track-ball and modded a spinner/steering wheel onto it, and have emulators for damn near every machine ever built.

Got Hyperspin running as my front-end (what selects your emulator and game you want to play).

It's a LOT of work to get everything working right - but when it's all over, it's a proud moment, that's for sure!

I'm too lazy to build one. I'd just order one through that link Pest put up, even if it is expensive as hell. It has literally every game I'd be interested in playing, so that's a bonus.

Sure, you will end up sacrificing something if you don't use the real thing. I just took a look in my den one day and saw: NES, SNES, N64, Wii, several GameBoys, a couple of Virtual Boys (with all of the games), a Sega Genesis, PLaystaion 1 & 2, an XBOX, a shit ton of controllers wired and wireless, and eleventy bazillion game cartridges and CD's. And I had several emulators with well over 1,000 ROMs. With my kids moving out I finally said '**** it' and gave all of it away bit by bit. I don't even play console games any more. If I get a nostalgic urge I'll just grab my cell phone and goof around.

Twisted Metal 2 was pretty awesome because of the stages and the 'world tour' aspect of it but Black was just next level in terms of graphics and game play. The analogue combinations that could pop out freeze shots, jumps, shields; all kinds of cool shit that really elevated the game, IMO.
I may try out Black. I'm gonna keep III, and try and purchase II again on amazon.

I've never played Black, but a bump up on graphics from II and III would be nice.

Morrowind was fantastic. The thing with Oblivion is that they made the quest system much easier so it really hand holds you. It wasn't that way in Morrowind. Morrowind also had such a low view range in compared to Oblivion. They covered for that fact by having dust storms all the damn time and the birds(whatever they were called) are very annoying. Those are the glaring parts that will probably disappoint.

However, the enchanting was fantastic. You could make some really great weapons. Also, you can make a mana stone that instantly reloads all your mana, etc. Lots of really cool stuff there. The great houses are fun to play through, etc. Lots of great stuff there too.

Go into it expecting the disappointment you felt with earlier fallouts and you'll end up pleasantly surprised instead. I'd also recommend tossing some mods in right away as well to improve the NPC look and other graphics, etc. Oblivion is essentially a "very" polished Morrowind with better graphics.
