Andy Reid shuts down your Chiefs QB controversy talk

http://www.arrowheadpride.com/2016/1...ntroversy-talk

by Joel Thorman Oct 31, 2016, 2:44p

You know Andy Reid was going to stand by Alex Smith and that’s what he did on Monday when facing the press. Reid has been doing this for a loooong time so he let reporters have their fun for a few minutes and then he shut down any talk of Nick Foles playing in front of a healthy Alex Smith. Will it work? I guess it depends on how well Foles plays this weekend ... if he plays this weekend since the Chiefs doctors contend Alex actually doesn’t have a concussion.

Check out this exchange between Reid and reporters this afternoon.

Q: You were asked whether you had to cut back the game plan when Foles came in and you said no. Did he allow you to expand the game plan, maybe do some things that you couldn’t do with Smith?

Reid: No. Alex, I’m not sure we realize how good he is. We’ve opened this thing up further than maybe we’ve ever opened it up. He does a tremendous job. It’s a shame he didn’t have a chance to finish off the game plan because he would’ve had a ton of success with it. Not to take anything away from Nick. We didn’t have to cut a thing out for Nick coming in. That was a win-win for both guys. To think one would’ve done better than the other, I don’t believe that. If Alex would’ve been in, we would’ve done the same thing.

Q: You guys his four passes of 30 yards down the field. That’s unusual for you guys. Was that because the way the game was going or because of who was at quarterback?

Reid: I think it was part of the plan. That was all in the game plan. They would’ve been called. They were right on the first 15. They were coming up so whether it was Alex in there or Nick they were coming up. A couple of them formation wise, there was a little confusion on the formation and guys popped open.

Q: Does Foles give you more capability in that area?

Reid: No, I’m not even sure I like the way you’re going with this. Alex can do all the things that need to be done in this offense and do them at a Pro Bowl-caliber level.

Q: Is he your quarterback when he’s healthy then?

I really don't understand why we can't have a discussion on these QBs without it turning into a bunch of hyperbole from both sides.

I didnt post any numbers on anything...

and I thought we were having a discussion on QB's...

So your comment on hyperbole has me stumped.

Of course he was the better guy, that's why Smith was kicked to the curb like a blind, three legged puppy nobody wanted.

Foles will make defenses and the critics respect us. Until we use all of our weapons like Foles did, we will go no further than the divisional round. Walrus is full of shit saying that Smith would have done the same thing. He probably wouldn't have even seen the busted coverage to even take advantage of it. If we had a diva receiver, there would be issues because he is too scared to make certain throws. It is not in his nature to exploit something that happens on the fly. Doesn't have the vision either.

Chiefs' passing game looked different (and better) with Nick Foles at QB

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Andy Reid said the Kansas City Chiefs would have connected on some long pass plays on Sunday against the Indianapolis Colts if Alex Smith been able to play the entire game at quarterback.

But the fact is the Chiefs got those big pass plays when Nick Foles was their quarterback and not Smith. The two shared the position because of Smith’s concussion that wasn’t a concussion, and the offense looked different when Foles was in charge.

Foles, in 22 pass attempts, completed four throws of 28 yards or more. Smith, with 19 attempts had none. Smith, in the season’s first six games, had eight throws of 28 yards or more.

Nick Foles brought an aspect to the vertical passing game that the Chiefs have been missing this season. Andy Lyons/Getty Images
Reid got a little combative on Monday when I asked whether the Chiefs have more capability to throw down the field with Foles.

“I’m not sure I like the way you’re going with this,’’ Reid said. “Alex can do all the things that need to be done in this offense and do them at a Pro Bowl-caliber level.

“I’m not sure we quite realize how good he is. We’ve opened this thing up further than we’ve maybe opened it up. He does a tremendous job. It’s a shame he didn’t get a chance to finish off the game plan because he would have had a ton of success with it.’’

Reid indicated the Chiefs liked their matchups against the Colts when throwing down the field. The Chiefs script their first 15 plays and some deep throws were coming up on the play list when Smith was hurt for the first time on the ninth play of the game.

Smith later returned to the game before leaving for good in the third quarter.

“To think one would have done better than [the other], I don’t think that,’’ Reid said. “I think if Alex had been in we would have done the same thing.’’

Reid later said Smith would be the starting quarterback when he’s ready to play. That could be on Sunday against the Jacksonville Jaguars at Arrowhead Stadium.

That’s certainly a reasonable stance. Smith has a lot going for him. The Chiefs have benefited from his consistency. His ability to protect the ball has helped the Chiefs stay in and even win a lot of games in his three-plus seasons as their starter. It’s right for Reid to stand up for Smith publicly.

But the passing game the Chiefs showed with Foles could carry them a long way if combined with their many other attributes. If they can get it with Smith as the QB, that’s great.

If not, making a change at quarterback is something for Reid to consider.

You idiots have NO PROOF that Foles will do better than Alex with this offense.

All you have is a partial game against one of the worst defenses in the league.

By all means though, turn what's left of this successful season over to an unknown.
