Best draft picks by Round - Round 2
Lots of solid pros here. My top ten are:

1. Willie Lanier, 1967. Hall of Famer, so let's start there. 11 years starting for the Chiefs, 8 pro bowls, 3 all-pro selections, and an interception in a Super Bowl. In 1994 he was named to the NFL's 75-year anniversary tea, and in 1999 The Sporting News listed him as the 42nd best football player of all time.
Here's something I never knew, though. The Chiefs traded Wille to the Colts in 1978 for a fifth round pick, but he retired before suiting up for them.

2. Jim Lynch, 1967. Talk about getting screwed over in the draft. Lynch was drafted as a middle linebacker in the second round, and three picks later the Chiefs drafted Lanier. Jim had a strong career after getting reassigned to ROLB, playing 11 years and getting one pro bowl selection.

3. Christian Okoye, 1987. His career was short, but nightmarish. Six seasons with the team, two pro bowls, and one all-pro. Objectively, he had only two good seasons, but those two seasons were full of fun.

4. Tim Grunhard, 1990. 11 years with the team and one pro bowl. He was a key element of Marty's power running game.

5. Mike Livingston, 1968. 12 years with the Chiefs and one pro bowl. He only had three seasons as a starter, but made 75 starts over the year. And he should be very well regarded, because 1969 was his first year playing notably, and he started 6 games as a third-stringer in the Chiefs' Super Bowl season. Thank this man.

6. Ed Podolak, 1969. 9 years as a Chief, with 4 years starting. He was a versatile back who could run, catch, and return kicks. Great game in the cursed Christmas 1971 game.

7. Brandon Flowers, 2008. Six seasons as a solid starter for the Chiefs, with one pro bowler. Textbook tackler on some really bad teams.

8. Dino Hackett, 1985. Six seasons with the Chiefs and one pro bowl. Decent player, good linebacker name.

9. Jonathan Hayes, 1985. Nine seasons as a Chief. Never made a pro bowl and wasn't much of a receiving threat, but he was a good blocking TE who could get out in routes occasionally.

10. Joe Delaney, 1981. Two seasons as a Chief with one pro bowl. Maybe he objectively doesn't get this spot, but come on. If you saw him play, you knew what he could do. If not for the tragedy he would rank much higher.

I mean, I'm pretty much always gonna pick Joe Delaney anytime he's an option to pick but purely from an on the field standpoint, Lanier.

And no, I'm not just saying that because I'm rocking the Willie Lanier STH jersey courtesy of that year that Scott Pioli decided to give us all a free jersey for eating his shit.

I still love that damn thing; wear it every home Sunday and for the last 3 years I think I've only ever seen one other one. That's just a damn shame.

Again, some great names, but this one is a no brainer. Mr. Willie Lanier, the greatest inside LB in Chiefs history, and he gets my vote for greatest ILB in NFL history. You can hear the stories about Huff and Butkus, but Mr. Lanier was better. My favorite Chief ever.

That's my observation as well. I think the second round may have produced more years of Chiefs service, but the third round had much more quality at the top end.

Obviously Willie Lanier is the obvious choice to vote for but I so badly want to vote Christian Okoye because I wasn't around Willie Lanier time and so I didn't get to watch him play except highlights but I got to watch the Nigerian Nightmare run over defenses and was a Tecmo Bowl power house.


I love Christian Okoye and got to meet him and get his autograph at a Menards grand opening. So I never had to wait for his autograph in the mail. He has strong hands holy crap. Genuine nice guy and good heart wish he got to play longer.
