IF it plays out I think the best case scenario would be to let Smith start the first half to get him some reps against a quality defense. Let Mahomes play the second half to get him some playing time. Hopefully he plays well and it can build some confidence. I think Andy will use him in the playoffs. I have a feeling we’ve been working on some tricky 2 QB formations with how athletic Mahomes is.

Nothing.

Mahomes looks great against Denver with backups then you look stupid for not benching Smith weeks earlier and you create a QB controversy going into the playoffs.

Mahomes struggles against Denver then you look stupid for giving up multiple draft picks and you're forced to seriously consider keeping Smith for another year because Mahomes looks awful.

Mahomes starts and sustains a serious injury which causes him miss significant time the next season, then you've sacrificed two out of his four cheap contract years to holding a clipboard or being on IR and waste a year of development.

You either start the whole offense with Smith and all healthy starters playing but with an ultra conservative game plan (like what Reid trotted out against the Colts at Arrowhead in 2013) or you start Bray with some slapdicks.

Andy shouldn't be making a decision on who to start week 17 because he is afraid to look dumb.

Using 1 game to determine if we look stupid about the draft selection is crazy. Anybody that uses 1 game to determine if a draft pick is the right choice is a fool. You are really stretching with this point.

This is the only valid reason you mentioned to not start Mahomes and it's a legitimate concern. But even in this scenario the only real concern is about Smith. If we are worried about starting Mahomes in a meaningless game and losing him to injury then you can't start him in preseason games either. Preseason games are experience builders that risk injury in meaningless games which is what week 17 is.

The true concern here is how an injury would affect the Chiefs offseason. That's the only point here that gives me pause about starting Mahomes.
