He was in Apocalypse Now as a chopper pilot and played a Drill Sarge in The Boys of Company C. In Full Metal Jacket Stanley Kubrick hired R Lee as an adviser and to train the selected DI actor. Kubrick was so impressed by R Lee he let the actor go and put Ermey in the part and the rest is history. R Lee commented he was nothing like the DI's he played and that he was actually a nice guy.
