RAPOPORT: Steve Spagnuolo, Dennis Allen, John Pagano names to watch at DC

Just heard on NFL Total Access.... FWIW. https://twitter.com/rapsheet/status/...864004097?s=21

Allen, the Saints DC, is a free agent for those who may read that and wonder.

It's not a terrible call. I just think it's less of a slam dunk than you might think.

I mean, is the scheme outdated? Is it specific player/skillset dependent and on a different set of rule enforcement than the current NFL allows? If so, Ryan is not going to help.

i ain't agin it. I'm just not on board entirely.

Also... Guess I don't get the hate for mike Smith as long as he's pushed to rethink the scheme. He's been terrific with every positions group he's coached. Not his fault sutton sucked.

If he had a single ****ing thing to do with the gameplan against the Patriots, then **** no. His unit went MIA against the Patriots.

Agreed. It'd be like a starting QB looking over his shoulder. Rex would be grabbing microphones...

That's my concern. Suttons defense at least made some adjustments to the new nfl. The idea that Rex Ryan doesn't seem to value edge rushers and wants the DL to be space eaters doesn't seem to adjust to the reality of today's nfl. Maybe Rex has seen the light. But it just feels like you're teaching an old dog new tricks.

I don’t think there’s anyone that’s a slam dunk. Everyone has warts. We get a young guy who’s hot with no experience or we get a retread who has a cascade of past failures.

The bar is low to improve this defense, and if nothing else, as fans we’ll have some hope due to change.

I remember Mecca saying Hali would NEVER be good as a 4-3 OLB. He was adamant about it.

Then I remember Hali telling me at a kick off luncheon he gained 5lbs to play OLB because they had him so lean playing DE.

His OLBs were outstanding all year. Its entirely speculation that he had any meaningful say in that gameplan. If the players revolted against Sutton it sure seems he's the guy the locker room believes was responsible for the fiasco.

I doubt that Reid is going to want Rex Ryan. I don't see them meshing at all. That's not an Andy Reid hire. Rex is a glory hound. That's just not Andy's style.

Still not against it necessarily, I just don't think it's really gonna happen.

The run defense wasn't the issue, we gave up some plays but we also got a lot of run stops on short yardage. We got bounced because NE converted about 10 3rd and long as ****s right over the middle and one down the sideline on Berry.

But there is a young guy out there. 39 to be exact. He played an instrumental part in forming the Legion of Boom in Seattle and subsequently one of the greatest defenses in modern history. He went down to Dallas and is well on his way to creating another fine secondary.

AND HIS NAME IS KRIS RICHARD *booboodobo*
