Dee Ford. New and Improved? 4-3 Ready!

Guess he's learning? AND playing the 4-3?

"They said I was offsides. Was I?”

These are the words that NFL Films captured from Dee Ford on the sideline after his crucial offsides penalty in the AFC championship game. Ford was in utter disbelief of the situation, as were Chiefs fans who thought the team had just punched their ticket to the Super Bowl. Instead they had to settle for the Pro Bowl, where Ford played on Sunday.

Ford explained many times during Pro Bowl week that he won’t let the costly penalty define him, and that he’s been through worse before. During the Pro Bowl, Ford had a good game, even though he was mostly playing out of position as a 4-3 outside linebacker. He had three tackles on the day and played throughout the day.

There was one moment though, in the fourth quarter of play, that brought up haunting memories of what could have been for the Chiefs. Ford nearly committed the exact penalty that nullified an interception for the Chiefs in the AFC championship game. This time, however, Ford caught himself offsides and got out of the neutral zone before the snap. Check it out:

You’ll notice Ford at the bottom of the screen, lined up over the broadcasts black line depicting the line of scrimmage. Ford quickly shuffles backwards before the snap and no penalty occurs. Unfortunately for Ford, live television captures everything, especially in the NFL.

Knowing the way Ford has handled the situation surrounding his AFC championship game penalty, he won’t let this moment get to him. He’ll probably laugh about it, but if he’d done this a week earlier the Chiefs would be playing in the Super Bowl on February 3rd.

I care about his sack numbers. Only a handful of players had more. 1 mistake isn't going to make me think we aren't better with him than without him.

We aren't better with him if we have to pay him AND Justin Houston. One of them is going to have to go. Houston is the more versatile player and a better fit in the 4-3.

It's simply a case of not having enough room for Ford and everything else they need. They can't go into next season looking just like this one. That means tough choices will have to be made.

Im thinking Houston agrees to a restructure or paycut.

Watch the Chiefs keep Ford. I just have this gut feeling. Hopefully my gut is wrong.

Leading the league in sacks is an overblown stat. We also faced more passing than any other team because of our offense. We need to be better at the point of attack. Ford doesn't help in that area. He's a 3rd down specialist at best.

I agree. The Patriots were last in sacks but 3rd in pressures. And they proved it against the Chargers and Chiefs.

It's not like the offense is going to stop putting the defense in those situations so we still need to have players who can get sacks.

What was your opinion on Ford before the Patriots game?

People who want Ford traded or who criticize him are the same ones who will be crying and screaming when the Chiefs lack a passrush, if ever he was to play for another team next year.

I won't be crying or screaming about anything. I want Ford tagged. If that means he gets traded and the pass rush isn't as good, so be it.

This team is 100% about Patrick Mahomes. Everything else is icing on the cake.

I can't speak for anyone else but my opinion of Ford hasn't changed.

He's never been healthy for an entire season before now. You don't sign guys like that to long-term contracts. Ever. I've felt that way all season and it hasn't changed. If that means he's not on the team next year, so be it.

I feel like Ford is the ideal tag player. If someone wants to give you a nice pick or two for him, do it. If not, let him play on it.

Maybe Ford has crooked eyes. I have that issue lining up my putts. Think for sure I'm lined up for the right shot but am way off on my alignment...
