FWIW Verderame said a player of personnel guy said that there are roughly 12 edge rushers viewed as 1st rd prospects.

Trade ford and likely cut houston but if we could get a 3rd or 4th for him that would be idea. His cap hit for his new team will only be 14M tho which is a lot more realistic. I think they will go after collins and trey flowers and look at Charles Omenihu in the draft. He's flying under the radar and has had two meetings with the chiefs.
Bucs are switching to a 34 and not sure JPP fits that as well as 43. Maybe a JPP for houston trade in the works? |

And they can’t ALL go in the first round. Now the question is if you can find a team that wants a more mature guy with some track record of production in the NFL. Ford kind of fits that bill, especially for a 34 team. Montez Sweat in the draft and Flowers in FA would be kind of a dream scenario for me. That sets you up with a really nice 3-man rotation for DE that is basically interchangeable (Sweat, Flowers, Speaks). That seems to be what Spagnuolo likes to have.

As someone said earlier, changes in coaches, scheme, culture and personnel on defense. It was needed last year. Berry, Houston and Ford all need to go. EB has played 3 games in the last 2 years. JH has played in about 2/3 of the games since becoming a 100 million dollar man. Ford was considered by most to be a bust until last (his contract) year. As a team you don't want that kind of "lead from the bench" mentality.
Worried about replacing the sacks. Ford and Houston benefited from Jones beasting in the middle. Whoever returns/replaces them will benefit as well. SS/box safety was the weakest link last year. Anyone who thinks that stopping a run for 3 yards to create a "2nd and 7 or 3rd and 6" instead of a "2nd and 3 or 3rd and 2" doesn't impact the game in a dramatic way is sorely mistaken. Stopping a TE for an 8 yard completion instead of an 11 yard 1st down can definitely change a game's outcome. Losing a game when you score 50 points tells me that it wasn't just the coaches, players, or scheme adjustments it was all of them. Stopping after changes to the coaches and scheme is like setting mousetraps in the kitchen but not in the pantry. It might look like you got them for a while but they'll be back.

I'm not sure you pay Flowers and play him at SDE, that's kinda what you just drafted Speaks to play.

I could see a scenario where if they traded Ford, they bring in a Shane Ray or Chris Long as an insurance policy for if a rookie replacement isn’t quite what they had hoped for in year one at LEO. |

There are 8 guys in Daniel Jeremiah’s top 50.
Nick Bosa Josh Allen Rashan Gary Montez Sweat Clelin Ferrell Jachai Polite Brian Burns LJ Collier Jaylon Ferguson He’s not listed but I think Charles Omenihu is a really good prospect.

I may be crazy, but if motivates correctly and can stay healthy, I could see Ray being similar to Ford.

He's a much better all around player. There's more to playing DE than sack totals. |
