NFL Proposing Incentives to Teams for Minority HC hires, etc.

This may get moved to DC soon, but here goes:

https://bleacherreport.com/articles/...ey-rule-tweaks

In an attempt to encourage teams to hire minority coaches, the NFL intends to present multiple resolutions to owners during the annual league meetings next week.

Per NFL.com's Jim Trotter, the resolutions that are expected to be voted on include removing an anti-tampering barrier that allows teams to block assistant coaches from interviewing for coordinator positions and an incentive program that will reward clubs for hiring minority candidates as head coaches or executive-level positions in the football operations department.

Under the incentive proposal, teams would receive a boost in their third-round draft pick if they hire a minority as head coach or primary football executive and keep him or her employed for multiple years.

Not even sure what to say about this . . . . . .

So you are saying that 14% of the US population is black should mean that a lot more players should be more diverse as well? Should the NFL adopt a draft proposal to give teams incentives for drafting white, asian, hispanic and arabic players? Clearly race is the #1 quality of people in some people's minds over talent.

How about let the teams (try) to hire their best candidates and (try) to draft their best players without giving a effing care in the world about their race?

Playing in the NFL does not equate to being a successful coach. Most NFL head coaches haven't played a down in the NFL. So instead of going to the NFL they immediately became graduate assistants in college and eventually worked their way up. How many former NFL players decide to hang it up for an 80 hour work week at low pay so they can work their way up?

I'm not sure what this means --or executive-level positions in the football operations department.

If you define football operations as the team itself, wouldn't a coordinator (DC or OC) qualify? If you look at the HC as the president, wouldn't a coordinator be a VP? That's pretty "executive" in my book.

I don’t see any of the compensation proposed as a major game changer in one draft - we’re talking about a max compensation level equivalent to a mid-4th round pick (moving up 10 spots from the first pick in the third).

I don’t think we see teams make a decision based solely on this, at all. But I don’t have a problem with small incentives for hiring a minority in a key spot, or for rewarding teams when minority individuals in their organization are hired away to be HC or GM.

I'm all for us being represented more among the head coaching and general manager/team executive ranks but not like this...not for the draft incentives. However, I do like the enhanced Rooney Rule proposal that expands to include coordinator positions. The more opportunities we get to interview, the better.

I still think the "Keep for Multiple Years" statement to end the OP article carries some weight here. Draft picks are not happening in the season of the hire by that statement.

And I also agree that this is a stupid idea.

That's actually my reaction, as well. I tend to see this as less of an incentive and more of a penalty for not hiring minority coaches. Seems like an over-correction that still fails to push towards the ultimate end goal, which should be filling positions based solely upon merit, regardless of ethnic, gender or other abstract factors.

It should be this way BUT.........identity politics RULES in our culture and society now regardless of experience and talent. And we know that there is HUGE $$(potential lawsuits - NAACP,ACLU i.e. to players union who are all in bed together) to be made in playing the "identity politics" card.

Looks like the heat is being turned up on Roger and the boys from the "whoa is me" crowd.

If anything it'll make it more difficult for minorities to ascend in the coaching and FO ranks

That’s becasue one side of Americans refuse to talk about race, while the other won’t stop talking about it. Guess who wins?

I have a minor odd story that happened this week. A regional media outlet was looking for a "local citizen" to interview on a housing issue. They talked to an expert who suggested me since we had just been conversing on that very issue. The media outlet came back and said no, and said they specifically wanted to interview a Hispanic person. I found that odd since the topic had nothing to do with race. It's not like I was getting paid or getting famous out of it, but it made me react like that Jaguars fan GIF to hear that.
