Oh yeah?!? Well, I just changed my avatar to the same one that all the NFL teams are using on Twitter. Such compassionate.

I really think they should anyway. They seemed very upset last night. They should go home and regroup and not play until their heads are on straight. If that's next season for them, then it's next season. I'm not going to push them.

I doubt the NFL can actually force BUF to play. And at this point, it looks like they're just waiting like everyone else, trying to plan for the eventualities they can plan for, and at some point they'll probably ask BUF how they want to go forward, and what they're options would look like.

That's what the lawyers call an 'efficient breach'.

When you have a pre-existing obligation to do a thing you no longer want to do and you determine that the costs of doing that thing are outweighed by the benefits of NOT doing that thing, you go ahead and accept the consequences of not doing it confident in the knowledge that you still come out ahead of where you'd be had you gone ahead and done it.

So if the Bills are content in the knowledge that NOT playing will them less than playing will, that's fine - don't play. But you're not absolved of the consequences of not playing.

So Buffalo can take the forfeit if they'd like, but it's asinine to hold the league up while we wait for them to 'get their minds right'. That's not the way this works.

Yep, pretty much what I was getting at. The NFL can't make BUF do anything, but how BUF chooses to act going forward will have consequences. They can choose not to play, or vice versa, and the NFL will act accordingly.

What happens next is on BUF. And not making a decision is the same thing as making one, at a certain stop point.

Change my username to Callous if you want, but I don't think the teams should be consulted on this. What if McDermott would prefer the unexpected bye week and a road game over a 50 percent chance of winning a bye week? Competitive factors come into play.

And is it only the Bills' decision, or do the Bengals have input? What if one team wants to play and the other doesn't?

I get that a team could conceivably forfeit any game, but if the Texans decide to forfeit next week because the game is pointless and they want to save some game checks, the league would/should pull their franchise. An NFL team is obligated to play the games that the league tells them to play, and while this situation is unfortunate, it's below the line at which the league's authority extends.

We played a game the next day after a player killed himself in front of the coach and GM.. I’m sure our players didn’t want to given a choice…

This is above my paygrade, but I doubt BUF or CIN will be consulted on the details. The NFL will probably say at a certain point, "if you decide to play, these are the conditions under which that will happen. If you decide not to play, these are the ramifications of that choice." Bottom line, PROBABLY there will only be two choices to make for BUF and then how things go forward will be entirely up to the NFL.

Well you can't exactly make them take the field at gunpoint, so that extent they're involved in the decision-making process.

But no, I don't think there's any reason the NFL should be asking Buffalo if they're ready to play this weekend. That's where the 'efficient breach' scenario enters the equation. Remind them of their obligations and what the consequences of not satisfying them would be to give them a full understanding of the equation involved.

At that point, if Buffalo has weighed the options and elects not to show up, there isn't much the NFL can do about it. And frankly I wouldn't really be bothered by either course.

If the Bills refuse to play their next weeks game, man. Thats pretty bizarre. I get canceling this last game but the world doesn't stop.

yep...if the bengals and bills are not rescheduled, the bills will likely forfeit sunday, because they'd then draw the patriots in the first round of the playoffs

the bills win the common games tiebreaker with cincy, because buffalo beat cleveland, pittsburgh and baltimore, who beat the bengals

Ok so punish them if they even try to do this. Take draft picks away.
