Eagles are again attempting to get a 4th and long conversion option on kick offs

https://www.nbcsports.com/philadelph...te-onside-kick

"The onside kick proposal is very similar to one the Eagles proposed a couple years ago before it was tabled. It would basically offer an alternative to a traditional onside kick. Teams would face a 4th-and-20 from their own 20 yard line with a chance to convert and keep the ball.

Here are a few key points about the proposal:

• A team may elect to go for this 4th-and-20 just twice per game and must be trailing its opponent to attempt. They must notify the referee of their attempt and the ref will notify the other team.

• If the offense converts, it’s a first down and normal rules apply. If the defense gets a stop, they get the ball at the spot.

• If a team commits a penalty on its first try, it would not be able to change its mind and opt for a traditional kickoff.

• Teams will still have the option of going for a traditional onside kick.

The reason the Eagles gave for this proposal was “competitive equity and fan engagement.”

Big no from me. Not just because the whole idea sucks but I can just imagine Spags inevitably opting for a blitz every time so we **** it up and give them back the ball. I know we have the best 3rd/4th and long offense but **** allowing other teams the chance to beat us because we can't get the ball back.

Let the team attempting have 2 options.

1. 55 yard FG (other team decides which direction)
2. Down and 10 from their own 5 yard line. If they convert they would still have to go 85 yards to win with however much time is left.
A 55 yard field goal? We would score on the opening drive and then Butker would kick 60 consecutive field goals for a 187-0 win.

Hell no!

Unless they want to make it 4th and 50 from their own 10, then I might consider it.

This has got to be nothing more than a ploy by networks in an attempt to keep games closer so viewers dont tune out in blowouts.

So, a PI call gets you the ball back in good field position? Sounds pretty easy, really. Certainly easier than the current onside setup.

Honestly, pretty much my initial thought. Beach would quit spending ANY capital at all on the defense and simply field the greatest offense of all time; we literally wouldn't NEED to field a defense.

I fear the NFL will morph into some weird CFL/XFL/WFL/USFL/NFL blend of shitty ideas.

If they start having Friday Night Games and 20 game schedules, then the NFL will have officially jumped the shark.

Boy oh boy, I want to be very wrong.

Just get rid of kickoffs.

I feel very "get off my lawn" not liking the complicated choices and what not, but it's not a ****ing board game... asking "do you want the ball here" or whatever just takes away from the game of actually playing football.

If you want the ball back, play gooder football.

The Xperimental Football League inspired this. Considering the XFL's partnership with the NFL, this rule eventually be approved as will the three-point conversion.

I don't understand why they can't revert to normal kick off rules for onsides attempts say in the last 5 minutes of the game. The whole point is to stop high speed collisions which you don't get in off side situations

Do the Eagles have some super secret play that converts this every time?

Fun in theory until a ticky tacky penalty occurs which makes it 4th and 5 or even an auto first.

Penalties would make this be so ****ing toxic it's not even worthy of implementation.
