Ravens denied Solari interview.

The Baltimore Sun reports the Ravens are turning to Plan B in their search for an offensive coordinator now that their top candidate, former University of Illinois HC Ron Turner, chose to become the Chicago Bears' offensive coordinator over the weekend. The Ravens have two publicly confirmed candidates: former University of Washington HC Rick Neuheisel and New Orleans Saints quarterbacks coach Mike Sheppard. Neuheisel made a strong impression with Ravens HC Brian Billick during the interview and might have significantly increased his stature in the search, a source said. He has been out of football since being fired by Washington in June 2003. Before the interviews, Sheppard was believed to be the second favorite, ranking just behind Turner. But with the Saints' offensive coordinator position unsettled - OC Mike McCarthy's contract expires March 1 - Sheppard is not a lock to take any Ravens offer because he could be in line for the same position with New Orleans. Another coach heavily linked to the Ravens has been Minnesota Vikings OC Scott Linehan. But if Billick wants to have someone in place by the weekend, it would push Linehan out of the picture. The NFL's anti-tampering rules state that the Ravens are barred from contacting Linehan until the Vikings are out of the playoffs. A long shot in this search could be Jim Fassel, a consultant last season with the Ravens. With fewer head coaching openings than expected, he might re-emerge as an option. The Ravens likely would want more than a one-year deal, however. USC OC Norm Chow, who has long ties with Billick, is still not considered a candidate, a team official said. The Ravens had wanted to talk to Kansas City Chiefs offensive line coach Mike Solari for the coordinator position but were denied permission.

Just an interesting tidbit. Good news for the Solari for OC guys like myself for when DV leaves.

Going to have some burgers and a movie "Troy". Check back with you fockers later tonight or tommorow. later

I thought a team was always allowed to talk to someone if they were offering a promotion.

Obviously, we're all Solari fans, but I hope we didn't screw him over. That never works in the long run.

i realize Solari is a good offensive line guy, but why would anyone think he'd make a good offensive coordinator?

How can the Chiefs deny him from interviewing?? I thought the policy was, you cant deny a guy an interview with another team if the position is a "step up" ??????

From what I've always understood, Solari plays a very big role in designing the running scheme each week.... I really wouldn't be surprised to see him become the OC when Vermeil retires and Al moves up to HC.

From what I've heard, the league does not consider it an official promotion to be a coordinator, only a head coach or asst head coach. The Falcons used it to deny Emmitt Thomas a shot at being a coordinator elsewhere a couple years ago when he was their secondary coach.

The league changed that rule a couple of years ago. My guess is that they talked to Solari about if before denying the request.

All taken from his bio @kcchiefs.com.

Solari Was an OC for one year at Pitt (college) not NFL experience but I wasn't aware of this before. At least he has some kind of knowledge of what it would be like.

Coached at Alabama (not sure if this was under Stallings, if it was that would be the reasoning for mentioning this)
Coached on Tom Landrys staff in Dallas.
Coached with SF before joining us ( Seifert years not sure if it was any of walsh's time. to lazy to look it all up )
Also was TE coach as well as OL at SF.

I just bring up who's staffs he was on because that would be a pretty impressive resume. He has taken Waters and done an awsome job with him. He helped Tait become a better player and the difficult swith to RT. I could go on with the obvious but we all know how amazing our oline has been. It also helps with the two hall of famers and good players.

All of that doesn't necessarily make him an OC candidate but he would definatly have a strong emphasis on the running game. JMO but I think he could be one of the next hot assistants and really already is. 50 years old and not over the hill yet either.

I think A AS/ Solari combo could be effective depending on Saunders ability to let him be the OC and not be to martz like, like alot of people fear. If AS could take all of the good things and weaknesses he learned from Gillman, Schottenheimer, and DV He might be a darn good fit. Who knows? I am not sold on it yet.

Even if we bring in a new HC from outside the orginization Solari could still be attractive to them as the next OC depending on who the next HC is. A defensive minded coach could want to keep a similar offense to what we run in tact and Saunders is sure to leave if CP passes him up again.

I think a really great combo would be Kirk Ferentz as an Oline guy himself coming in with Solari as OC.

But wtf do I know?

Just brainstorming and not making much sense, that's all.

Not much to go on there either with his lack of OC experience. I really like the guy though. Good demeanor and great work ethic. I think if we go with this offense or a version of it he would be a good choice If AS is here or not as HC. If he is he might be in good balance with Saunders' tendencys to go a bit coo coo with the playcalling at times, being he is a strong believer in the run game.

If not Saunders he might still be a candidate if the HC would want to keep the same or similar offense.

Just a question, wasn't our old qb coach hired as Chicagos OC last year? What the hell happened to him?
