Been to Canton?

The end of next week I will be visiting my sister in Ohio. I plan on stopping in Canton. Is there anything that is a must-see at the HOF?

If you're going to be there for 4+ hours you can see pretty much everything...at least I did. I especially enjoyed the early AFL stuff. There's some really great early Texans/Chiefs and L. Hunt stuff/info. I kinda shorted the room with all the busts...they don't have a lot of player info in that room...

That was a couple/few years ago when Stram was inducted...and Allen. So things may have changed, but I doubt it. Even on HOF induction weekend that place was manageable.

Personally I enjoyed what I'll call the large screen computers where you can pick players and watch highlights from their career.

Away from the HOF there's a place called The Winking Lizard,if you're a beer fan it's a must stop, their selection is incredible. If you go would you mind picking me up a case of Lowenweiss?

I haven't been there since I was a kid. I remember getting tons of free posters.

I'd go look for the free posters.

VARSITY
I've been to Canton 3 times. First was when Len Dawson went in and then next day the Chiefs played the 49ers at Faucett Stadium next door. I've been up to Cleveland/Canton a couple other times since. The HOF if a must...like a trip to the Holy Land for an NFL junkie. Besides seeing the Chiefs stuff -they have Willie Lanier's helmet with the big pad down the middle- it's truly sensory overload. Give yourself a good 4 or 5 hours so you can enjoy everything. They have a cool theater that shows NFL films non stop, the theater rotates 90 degrees (if memory serves) so it's pretty cool. The last time I was there they shot most of the movie at Arrowhead when Marty was coach, and it took you through an entire Sunday Game Day for the players. Driving up to the stadium, going into the tunnel, locker room, warm ups, game, post game, then going home. Way cool, especially since it was shot at Arrowhead.

Canton's not very big, maybe 25,000 people. There's a cool park across the freeway from the HOF where you can visit President McKinley's tomb and the Stark County (I think i't Stark County) museum. If you're into presidential history, some of the McKinley stuff is cool. There's a great old restaurant in downtown Canton called Bender's Tavern.

http://www.bendersrestaurant.com/

It's been there for about 100 years. When the Canton Bulldogs were an NFL team, the bar is one of the places where the early NFL players hung out. The old bar is mahogany, and the atmosphere is very turn of the century. Reminded me a lot of the Savoy Grill here in KC.
Good steaks, seafood, etc. A little pricey, but not bad if you're on vacation.

If you have time, check out the Goodyear Mansion in Akron, just a few miles up the road. It's between Cleveland and Canton. The mansion is in the Cuyahoga River Valley, forest and hills, and strangely enough looks a lot like the Ozarks. The house reminds me of Batman's Stately Wayne Manor. It's the home of the guy who started Goodyear Tires. It's actual name is "Stan Hywet Hall." It's really cool. The weekend I went they also had a classic car show of cars from 1930's and 1940's. That was awesome.

Cleveland Rocks. Have big fun.

Check out the Bronco players section in the HOF, it's on the back wall of a broom closet.

I went in 1998, and it was awesome. I had the time of my life... unreal. I gained a huge respect for Jim Thorpe.

I was just out of college, and was making the tour of the country trip with my friend. We were on the way back to cally from NY, after circling the southern states and up the east coast.

We were pretty low on funds, and were outside the hall of fame, my friends Aunt lived in Canton so we had bummed some free R&B for the night, and we MISSED IT!!

Didn't have the money to do the thing as my friend wasn't really into football anyway.

All those commercials, "The NFL Hall of fame, don't miss it!", and I fuggin did exactly that. Walked up to the window, and then walked away when I seen the price.

Hope I get back there someday.
