Brandon Browner signs UFA contract with Denver... like they need more CB's

Brandon Browner and Mitch Meeuwsen Sign Free Agent Contracts

Browner with Denver and Meeuwsen with Miami.

April 25, 2005

Corvallis, Ore. - Former Oregon State University cornerback Brandon Browner has signed a free agent contract with the Denver Broncos and free safety Mitch Meeuwsen has reportedly signed a similar contract with the Miami Dolphins. The Dolphins will not officially announce their free agent signings until April 29.

Browner, a 6-4 native of Sylmar, Calif., is only the second player in school history to forgo his college eligibility and make himself eligible for the NFL Draft -- he would have been a junior in '05. He joins former running back Steven Jackson, a first round selection of the St. Louis Rams last year, as the only individuals from OSU to declare for the Draft early.

Browner started every game of his career (23). He was a 2004 preseason candidate for the Jim Thorpe Award, presented annually to the nation's premier defensive back. Browner was the 2003 Pac-10 Freshman of the Year after making six interceptions and helping the team to the Las Vegas Bowl title. He also earned mention on several Freshman All-American Teams.

Meeuwsen, from Forest Grove, concluded his career with 217 tackles and holds the OSU record for pass interceptions with 20. He was a 2004 First Team All-Pac-10 Conference selection, an Associated Press Third Team All-American and an ESPN.com First Team All-American. Meeuwsen was semifinalist for the Thorpe Award in '04.

___ I was kinda hoping the Chiefs would get him... I guess when the Donkos drafted 3 CB's they needed to make sure they had enough so they got Browner also.

This guy was a a first day pick on many mocks ... what happened with him?

I think Denver should sign up as many corners as they can... hell, they need 11 on the field when they play Indy.

I think he did very bad at the combine. It would still have been nice if the Chiefs would have drafted him instead of one of the O-line/D-line projects or the Tulane QB.

I think the QB was from Tulsa. I think Denver is doing the Car Dealership trick. Put enough salesman out there, someone might sell something.

Yeah he was. I knew Tulane seemed wrong when I typed it, but I thought I was just misspelling it or something.

I prefer waiting until players actually step on a football field before "grading" any drafts. What a crazy concept.

I think he'll translate to a safety...mostly for size and speed considerations. He's a good FA Stab for sure. He's probably better than Dunver's first pick.

Whats funny Den.....is how you always have those unfortunate "1 in a million shot, dad...one in a million" where you accidently fall on a d!ck with your mouth open.

I have been reading some Bronco boards and apparently you guys drafted the next Dante Hall. Is this true? I don't know how it can't be. They are both short and everything.

I hear that, but I wasn't grading, just laughing at idea that beating Indy is becoming the Invesco's Mt.Everest.

Obtaining Crennel's rejects, now that's a crazy concept.

This year? I bet you do...

Don't worry...we Chief fans know a bad draft when we see one. We say things of that nature.

From what I heard Browner wasn't well thought of by scouts who watched his tapes. They said 5th,6th or 7th depending on how he ran. Well he ran bad so he dropped completely out. Brandon Browner is basically a slower Lenny Walls clone he'd make a decent FS but doesn't have the quickness or lateral movement to be a very good NFL corner. Plus with any big corner his hip swivel is real slow hence why a guy like Walls gets owned by smaller faster recievers another reason they have issues with the Colts.

Well we knew going in it wasn't going to be a GREAT draft....we sacrificed a little this year for what looks to be a great draft next year. I'm just hoping Washington tanks and you guys see Leinart for the next 15 years.
