Who has remote start for their cars?

This is a spinoff of the "Lock your doors" thread. Bearcat said he had remote start and I do as well. I bought mine as an add-on kit several years ago at K-Mart for about $80. Worth every penny if you park your vehicle outside. They even work from a third story office bldg so lots of people can use it twice per day.

just put antifreeze in their cat's tuna. or run it over with a lawnmower.

cheap, but effective...and damn funny

Myself and a mechanic buddy installed it. It came with a video intallation aid. The hardest part is locating the proper wires to tap. Mine has a burglar alarm that I didn't bother to hook up. It also has a feature that turns on the headlights to indicate the car is running. I didn't hook that up eiher but I would if I wanted to start it from 3 stories up.

These things are illegal in my state. Not directly, but it is illegal to have a car running, unattended, even in your yard/driveway.

It's also illegal to idle your car for more than a minute (though that might just be a Spokane County law), which is funny, since there are quite a few lights in Spokane that are longer than that.

That's just one more stupid law I'd gladly violate.

That law is meant for people who leave their keys in their car while its running. For obvious reasons.

It's mostly for environmental reasons.

I have one but it's not smart enough to wait for the glowplugs to heat up so it's a complete waste in the winter for me.

They can't be installed on manual transmission vehicles either. Legally, that is.

Mine came with it, and has a setting where it'll run the defrost without it having to be set to defrost (maybe this isn't a new thing?). It warms up quickly, and it's been really mild this winter, so I don't use it much... when I get off work, my car is one of only a few in the garage, so I'll turn it on before I get to it. Even though I have to press the lock button before the remote start button to get it to start, and the fact that you have to have the key in the ignition, I've never been one to leave my car while it's running, so I'm still somewhat paranoid about it.

Mine works without the key in the ignition. It starts and runs just fine. But put it in gear and it dies. You can't steal it just because it is running. Bearcat, use that remote starter. It is much better on your engine to warm up before putting load on it. I use mine if it's under 50 degrees.

Yep. If you touch the brakes, or open the hood on my car while its running on "remote" mode, it shuts off.

It also has a sensor in there to prevent you damaging the starter while turning the key while its on.
