BSB: Shockers Dominate TCU, 18-8
NORMAN, Okla. - Senior Brandon Hall’s 4-for-4 performance sparked Wichita State offensively, leading the Shockers (46-20) to an 18-8 victory over the TCU Horned Frogs. Eighteen, the most runs scored by Wichita State in NCAA Regional play, topped the school’s previous record of 16 held by the 1996 team against Rice. Hall’s career-high four hits allowed him to tie his career high in runs with three. Derek Schermerhorn also set a new career high in hits and RBI, going 5-for-6 and driving in five runs. Conor Gillaspie and Blake Hurlbutt ended with three hits a piece, with Gillaspie contributing three RBI. TCU led off the game with back-to-back singles by Bryan Kervin and Steven Trout. A walk to Matt Carpenter loaded the bases and a single by Keith Conlon scored two. Brandon Hall started the bottom half of the second inning with a solo home run to left field, his second of the season. Blake Hurlbutt and Brian Spear drew consecutive walks and the runners were moved on a sacrifice bunt by Noah Krol. Hurlbutt scored and Josh Workman reached on an error by the short stop. Back-to-back doubles by Derek Schermerhorn and Matt Brown plated three, putting the Shockers up 5-2. Hall’s third homer of the year, another shot over left field, added one for the Shockers in the third. It was the fifth multiple-home run game for a Shocker this season, with Conor Gillaspie having one and Damon Sublett three. With one out in the fourth, Schermerhorn, Brown, Gillaspie, and Hall hit consecutive singles to drive in two. TCU gained their first base runners since the first inning in the top of the fifth with back-to-back singles by Corey Steglich and Ryan Pack. The runners moved up a base on a sacrifice bunt from Kervin. A wild pitch allowed one to score. But WSU got that run back when Kenny Waddell drew a walk in the bottom half and stole second. A single by Workman crossed the runner to make the score 9-3. A Shocker eight-run sixth inning put the game out of reach for the Horned Frogs. Brown led off the inning with a base on balls. Gillaspie tripled to right center crossing the run. Hall reached base for the fourth time with a walk and a single by Hurlbutt brought home one. Consecutive walks to Spear and Krol forced one home and loaded the bases for a Waddell double that plated two. Another double by Schermerhorn scored two more and a single by Gillaspie brought him in from second, giving the Shockers a 14-run advantage. TCU fought back, scoring four in the seventh. Five singles, hit by Andrew Walker, Steglich, Kervin, Chad Huffman, and Carpenter, drove in four to make the score, 17-7. WSU wasn’t done yet, adding one in the seventh with two outs on a single by Waddell, a walk to Workman, and another hit from Schermerhorn. TCU squeezed one more run out in the top of the ninth with a pair of doubles from Carpenter and Hunt Woodruff, ending the game 18-8. Sophomore starter Travis Banwart (9-4) earned the win, allowing seven earned runs in 6 2/3 innings on nine hits and four strike outs. Khol Nanney and Anthony Capra combined for a scoreless 1 1/3 innings and Noah Krol allowed one earned run in the ninth, but struck out two of the five batters he faced. Wichita State will play in the 7 p.m. game tomorrow against the winner of TCU and Oklahoma, who will play at 1 p.m. |
