Were you profiled? Or do you stiff people and return to the same restaurant? As a rule, if you stiff a server, for whatever reason, the rest of the staff will know all about it and you aren't likely to ever get good service unless you wait out the staffing turnover. Not saying it's fair, especially the profiling bit, but it happens.

edit-
whoops, by no means did I mean to call you cheap, just that the server thought you were and added the auto-grat.

Servers profile too!

I could get it myself, and wouldn't have to wait for you to stop flirting with the person at the end of the bar just for the pleasure of overpaying you for my beer.
I tended bar for a while and still will on occasion when I need some beer/gas/food money. Okay, beer money. Anyways, I always tip the bartenders/servers quite well as a result of having been on the other side of the transaction.

Do you all tip painters, movers, etc.? I worked at a moving and shipping company for a bit as well and every so often a person would slip us a couple extra bucks. The best were the people that would buy you a pizza or something for lunch so you could just eat and keep working.

This needs to happen more, if you think about it your "server" spends about the same amount of time placing your order, ensuring it was all correct, boxing it all up, adding the condiments, napkins then processing your order when you get to the store. Its really no different than if you came and sat down (just minus the drinks). The "to go" people don’t make much more than the servers so don’t think that. I don’t think you really need to leave 18% but you need to leave something. IMO.

Another thing on the same subject that irritates me is the mandatory tip most resturaunts add for large groups of people. To me, the tip is something given for good service, but to demand it be given is tacky IMO - And, I have noticed that those that automatically add the tip into the order usually give the poorer service to boot.
Its to protect the server from cheap bastards, they get killed running around like crazy then get nothing at the end.

I doubt they really "ensure its all correct", and the kitchen staff does the boxing and adding all the condoments.

Why don't we all just start walking around handing dollars to anyone who crosses our path? "Thanks for the smile, buddy, really made my day!"

Not at the restaurant I worked at. We had a server who was in charge of taking orders, putting them in, making sure the food came out correctly, boxing it up, putting the dressings/condiments etc with it and then running it out to the cars.

Reminds me of the other side of the coin. I go on a couple of golf trips during the year. Trip 4 years ago at Pinehurst everyone throws 20 bucks in per day into the pot (12 guys) and winning teams of the day split the pot 60-40. We always give out the winnings the next morning at breakfast.

Well the following morning at the local breakfast house we have gone to every morning we had this nice waitress (I still remember her name .. Tina) did a wonderful job and had pleasant attitude, even with a 12 golfing smart@sses. So those of us who won left her our winnings from the prior day. The bill was about $70 for all of us and left her a $240 tip. She actually started crying when we told her to keep the change. She was having a bad week so to speak and was not sure how she was going to make it this month.

Needless to say when we arrived the next morning ,our last day there, we were met like Kings from the waiting staff. Manager came out to meet us the next morning and said we all had breakfast on the house. Tina was waitress again and told us not to leave a tip for today. We still left her 20% of what we ordered.

Eh .... People believe what they want. I saw a true emotion when she broke down and cried infront of 12 strangers. Also I expected this response as well from this place.

I tip when they bring it to my car. I tip if I sit there and have a beer while I wait for my food.

I was actually talking about me physically getting out of the car, going inside, asking for the food at the bar.

As for making sure the food came out correctly & condiments are there....I doubt it. If I don't check....something is missing - regardless of where I go. When I eat chicken fingers at Applebee's, I always ask for extra honey mustard when I order.....I'm not sure that I have had one time where I didn't have to ask them to go back and get it for me because they didn't bring it out the first time.
