Well the following morning at the local breakfast house we have gone to every morning we had this nice waitress (I still remember her name .. Tina) did a wonderful job and had pleasant attitude, even with a 12 golfing smart@sses. So those of us who won left her our winnings from the prior day. The bill was about $70 for all of us and left her a $240 tip. She actually started crying when we told her to keep the change. She was having a bad week so to speak and was not sure how she was going to make it this month.

Needless to say when we arrived the next morning ,our last day there, we were met like Kings from the waiting staff. Manager came out to meet us the next morning and said we all had breakfast on the house. Tina was waitress again and told us not to leave a tip for today. We still left her 20% of what we ordered.

Very cool. That's a great story.

I've been on some golf trips like that. We were always a pain in the ass to wait on but also very free with our money. Funny how golf, alcohol and being away from home will do that, huh? I guess throwing some cash around is part of relaxing.

And its sitting right there! I could get it myself, and wouldn't have to wait for you to stop flirting with the person at the end of the bar just for the pleasure of overpaying you for my beer.
If you weren't such a dipshit, maybe he'd be flirting with you instead.

Couldn't agree more, it's one thing if you have them mixing drinks for you all night, but to get you a beer...come on.

couple weeks ago, we went to a party for a guy that was held in a special room at the back of a bar. we had our own bar and bartender in the room. we got there pretty early and the bartender had just arrived and was setting things up. i went up and ordered a couple glasses of wine for my wife and daughter and a crown & 7 for myself.

as he was fixing the drinks, i saw the tip glass on the bar. i figured, what the hell...we'll be there for a couple hours. might as well tip him while the glass was empty. maybe get a little extra attention like a stronger mixed drink. so i drop a twenty in the glass. dude then gives me the drinks and says "thanks".

as i turned to go back to our table, i notice him grabbing the $20 out of the glass and stashing it in his pocket. couple minutes later, he left the room and was replaced by some other gal that tended the bar for the rest of the evening.

I was taught by father to practice preemptive tipping (aka dago tipping)as it is known amongst our family.

My family has been in and around all facets of the service industry.

If we frequent an establishment or want to put a new one on our list. WE TIP GOING IN THE DOOR AND GOING OUT. That means the host/hostess, the bartender, the server, busboy, cooks and manager if it is a restaurant.

In any other setting everyone gets a taste if they warrant it.

I look at the practice as sowing a crop. I always get tables, my food is always right, my drinks are perfect and the service is always over the top.

I have obtained reservation on booked night and walked past everyone waiting.

I have had tables cleared of patrons for me. If I need a haircut they always fit me in at my leisure.

I have used this in other cities and it has the same affect.

It is never extravagant but just enough to make them want to help me before anyone else.

This is how I do it and it has worked for 25 years.

One thing I've noticed (along these same lines mentioned)....I've noticed lately, many different kinds of businesses will now include a "tip line" on your credit card receipt if you pay with your debit/credit card.

I've been to several local taco shops...used my debit/credit....went to sign the bill....and there's a tip line....are you freaking kidding me? So - you just charged me an additonal 50 cents to a dollar just to run my card....and you also want to provide a subtle hint about a tip (for just doing your job)????

Insane.

I know I've seen that tip line pop up in other industries besides food...but I cant recall the others.....either way...insane!

We ordered a pizza the other night. The guy taking my order asked if I wanted to put a tip amount on the card, and I did (normal 20% or so tip). When the pizza arrived and I had to sign the receipt there was a blank space labeled "Additional Tip" above the final total. WTF is that? I was actually a bit offended by that.

it makes it rather awkward when the worker is starring at you when you put a gigantic zero in the tip space.

I remember I got bent out of shape here on chiefsplanet because I said I hated when people came in a the last minute of a restaurant. Sully pointed out that your shift doesn't end until it ends. Although I remember running up and down steps for a double shift going into and out of air conditioning, steem from the dishwashing, and sweat. Got me feeling gnarly at the end, but it gave me an idea of those guys do behind the scenes

Another thing on the same subject that irritates me is the mandatory tip most resturaunts add for large groups of people. To me, the tip is something given for good service, but to demand it be given is tacky IMO - And, I have noticed that those that automatically add the tip into the order usually give the poorer service to boot.
well most servers have 4 or 5 table sections...and turn them no more than two or three times a night...so if your party takes up a whole section for two hours...rings up a $300 bill and you leave $5 bucks...not only does that server make jack shit for the night but he/she ends up paying to serve you...most restaurants servers have to tip out 3% of their total sales...so on a $300 tab the server has to pay $9 to bussers, hosts and the bartender...which is why a 15% gratuity is generally added to parties of 8 or more...

If the service is lousy, speak to a manager about it and they will waive the automatic gratuity...
