Did Savage deserve to be fired?
I don't understand his firing. I thought he was doing a good job in Cleveland. Sure this year went bad, but his body of work has been good in Cleveland. I remember last year(2007), when everyone was applauding him for the draft. How he moved back in to the first round to get Quinn. The roster also seems to have the most talent in years. I don't believe this years results are his fault. In fact, I wouldn't mind bringing him in here as an assistant to the new GM, much like Kuharich was under Carl.

Definitely in agreement with you... I think that people are just lumping Savage in with the rest of the failure of this year for the Browns, but they have a lot of talent on the roster thanks to his moves.

He's not a people person. I'm not sure he would do well working as an assistant. He seems to be an all or nothing type guy.

I tend to evaluate less on the results of the moment and more on the underlying fundamentals. I've thought Gruden was a good coach since his first year in Oakland and his less than desired results in Tampa the last few years haven't changed that opinion. I'm not a huge Thigpen fan because I don't think his fundamentals and accuracy are ever going to get him to the franchise level. I didn't like Herm since he led the Jets to a victory over SD in the playoffs a few years ago. I signed off Pennington and his rag arm immediately after his last year with the Jets -- this year hasn't changed that opinion.
I haven't followed Cleveland that closely, but I'd give Savage a chance in KC. It's not like he is Matt Millan where every move he makes leaves you wondering if he's trying to screw things up. If I was the owner in Cleveland and thought his player moves were good, I'd give him another chance to find a good coach. |
