However, Chiefs fans should not expect the same results as those delivered by Flacco and Ryan. I say that for mainly one reason. Both Flacco and Ryan finished their senior years at their respective schools. That level of maturity and leadership experience certainly helped them in their preparation for their rookie year in the NFL.

Both Stafford and Bradford will be underclassmen if they come out. They won't have the same level of maturity or leadership experience when they hit the NFL. I know they are both leaders, but in college being a senior in the lockerroom carries a lot weight and respect even if there is a talented QB in the lockerroom as well.

Take Mizzou for example. Last season Chase Daniel was a leader on the team, but THE leaders on the team were Pig Brown and Martin Rucker. Seniors carry the big stick in college.

Thigpen had a good season. Maybe he will develop into a franchise QB but he has a long way to go. He's still a long shot. I'd rather not invest another 2 years hoping he develops into a franchise guy. Yes, I'd be more patient with someone who has a better pedigree. The chances of success are much better because they are bringing something to the table that the 7th rounder just doesn't have.

I also see an inherent weakness in Thigpen's deep ball. He has good velocity on short and medium passes, but he constantly underthrows on the long ball. I don't think that can be fixed by coaching or conditioning.

We've seen this game played before. You're assuming that if Thigpen lights it up next year, that he'll keep his job. We've seen in too many instances that first round QBs are often handed starting jobs they don't deserve.

Its pretty common for first round QB's to sit out their rookie years. Also I wouldn't worry about Thigpen playing lights out in practice, especially if we switch back to a real offense. I think Croyle would be our best QB in practice too...

It is becoming more common for high first round QBs to be throw into the fire right away.

Years ago, they were given an opportunity to sit and learn, but the money and pressure have changed that.

I could be wrong, but I can't think of any recent ones other than Matt Ryan...

I thought it was a GIVEN, that management would be more PATIENT with a 1st round QB over a 7th round PS player. Why the heck is there even a debate?

We just shouldn't play anyone we draft this year, our team is already young and everyone deserves more time to develop and its too early to give up on any of them.

At some point, yes. Eli didn't start the season opener. Cutler didn't, Rothlisberger didn't, I'm not 100% but I don't think Leinhart did either. Payton isn't really very "recent".

Perhaps my wording was misleading.

I said "right away", and I should have said in their rookie seasons.

I've watched the NFL for over forty years, since I was a tyke, and and until the last ten years or so, it's was relatively rare to see a rookie QB to hit the field.

So seeing these kids all play in their rookie seasons still seems unusual to me.
