As a server, I'll say that I do like the idea of actually getting tipped based on merit because I'm a good server. The real question is what people think is a good tip. I'll go ahead and take this chance to put out there that for reasonably good service, anything less than 15% is not acceptable and 10% or below is insulting. I just like to let people know this stuff when given the opportunity since, trust me, there are a lot of people that flat don't know how to tip.

never worked as a server, but I agree... 15% means they did their job... 20% means you appreciated it... anything less and they either sucked or maybe you shouldn't be going out to a bar or restaurant....

btw... in most other countries that "don't tip" the servers get paid a HELL of a lot more than here in the states...
