How would Shanahan lose out on money if he didn't coach this year?

The owner still owes Shanahan ~$17M and owes the other coaches ~$17M as well(combined). If those coaches aren't actively looking for a different head coaching job this offseason, then it will break their contract that is guaranteeing them that amount.

He doesn't have to actually coach to get the money, he just has to prove that he went out and looked, and no coaching position suited him....

I seriously doubt shanny signed a contract that says if you fire me I have to actively look for another job to get paid.

This isn't unemployment.

I bet he did. I bet there was a clause that says if one party violates the contract, the other has to make an attempt to mitigate the damages.

WTF?? Shanahan was FIRED and he had THREE YEARS LEFT on his contract. He's OWED that money if HE DOESN'T find employment.
