Chiefs trade 34th pick for Cassel and Vrabel

Chiefs just got Cassel, ON NFLN!

http://www.kcchiefs.com/news/2009/02...with_patriots/

Quote:
The Kansas City Chiefs announced on Saturday that the club has acquired QB Matt Cassel and LB Mike Vrabel from New England in exchange for the Chiefs second-round pick (34th overall) in the 2009 NFL Draft. The agreement is contingent on both players reporting and passing their physicals.

“I have a long history with both players,” said Kansas City Chiefs General Manager Scott Pioli. “Mike and Matt are men that I respect both personally and professionally. I look forward to having them as new members of the Chiefs family.”

I previously was convinced that the Patriots wouldn't be able to work out a trade sending quarterback Matt Cassel to the Chiefs because I believed that new Chiefs G.M. Scott Pioli and his former colleagues in New England feared the perception that one side got snookered.

There was no such fear, but it won't change the perception that one side got snookered.

Peter King of SI.com (who also does some work for NBC, and pretty much every other media company on the planet) reports that the Chiefs gave up only a second-round draft pick for Cassel.

Wow.

A second-round pick, for a guy who merited a $14.65 million, one-year contract based on his play in 2008.

Let's consider that for a second. Daunte Culpepper with blown-out knee was traded for a second-round pick. A.J. Feeley was traded for a second-round pick.

So, with all due apologies to the Patriots, the current score is Pioli 1, Pats 0

Can't wait to revisit this comment from Florio in 5 years when the score is Belichick - 2 more Lombardi Trophies, Pioli - 0 AFC Championship game appearances.

The AFC may be tough, but the West sucks. I don't believe we will have a chance this year, but it isn't out of the realm of possibility in this division

He'll have to improve a lot this season just to stay where he is in QB rating or any other measure you want to use for QB play.
That's a really weak argument, but people continue to make it. Most great and successful Super Bowl caliber QB's have a great supporting cast. You could count on one hand the number of QB's in NFL history that could lift a team of bad players up into a good offense.

If Pioli fails to put weapons around Cassel, he'll fail. But before even Tom Brady went 16-0, the years before that they were a 10-6, 11-5 type team with Brady and his mish-mash group of WR's, which is why they went out and got Welker and Moss. Tom Brady wasn't even TOM BRADY before that.

Perhaps. But that in turn gets canceled out by the fact that Carl Peterson would not have made this trade since the quarterback was younger than 35, which means by definition that it's a good move.

If the Chiefs are going to swap 1sts with someone, they better get a hell of a lot more than a 3rd.

How about giving the guy a chance first? I know that all of you NFL GMs posting on the board here feel the one and only way to rebuild this team is drafting a QB at #3, and now that we have made this trade all hope is lost. Give me a break with that shit. Let Cassel come in here and play, let Pioli rebuild this team, then give us your breakdown. What a joke all this negativity is.

Based on POINTS allowed, the Patriots were 25th. That sucks.

Uh, dude, you do realize that you had the chart upside down, with the 32nd-ranked Lions at the top?

The patriots defense was 8th (not 25th), at 19.3 ppg.
