Chiefs trade 34th pick for Cassel and Vrabel

Chiefs just got Cassel, ON NFLN!

http://www.kcchiefs.com/news/2009/02...with_patriots/

Quote:
The Kansas City Chiefs announced on Saturday that the club has acquired QB Matt Cassel and LB Mike Vrabel from New England in exchange for the Chiefs second-round pick (34th overall) in the 2009 NFL Draft. The agreement is contingent on both players reporting and passing their physicals.

“I have a long history with both players,” said Kansas City Chiefs General Manager Scott Pioli. “Mike and Matt are men that I respect both personally and professionally. I look forward to having them as new members of the Chiefs family.”

If Pioli fails to put weapons around Cassel, he'll fail. But before even Tom Brady went 16-0, the years before that they were a 10-6, 11-5 type team with Brady and his mish-mash group of WR's, which is why they went out and got Welker and Moss. Tom Brady wasn't even TOM BRADY before that.
Well Tom Brady won a SB his first year as a starter surrounded by some pretty ordinary guys.

Whether you want to compare Cassel's first year with Brady's first year, or compare Brady with a great cast and Cassel with a great cast, Brady comes out miles-and-miles ahead. From my perspective we have an average NFL QB. Maybe he'll turn out better than that, but in my mind that is nothing to be too excited about.

He'll have to improve a lot this season just to stay where he is in QB rating or any other measure you want to use for QB play.

I can definitely understand an argument that a #3 pick is (or should be) rare, and that's where you pick up a franchise quarterback. I've been in that camp too, assuming that the two QBs that are available are franchise-caliber. However, if Pioli doesn't think they're franchise-caliber, then I guess this is a way to get a quarterback he likes and then get a great tackle or linebacker or something to support him.

Thats hardly a fair comparison when they are perrenial contenders now, and Pioli is rebuilding a pile of poo from the ground up...

Tom Brady is arguably the greatest quarterback of all time. It's no shame that he comes out ahead of Cassel.

Grbac was 27 during his first season with the Chiefs. Cassel will be 27 next season. Trading for the backup QB on the leagues hotest team is exactly the kind of move Carl would make.

If carl had just been a member of that team and played a role in drafting the guy.

My thought too. Hope that some teams are in love with one of the QB's or OT's. It'd be nice to trade down a bit and get our 2nd back. Otherwise, Curry here we come. Maybe they think he can be a rush backer. Before you say he's not worth the pick...Derrick Thomas was the 4th overall pick.

This is a good deal. I'm certain that Pioli and Haley weren't scared of flopping their first pick, rather they both agreed that Stafford and Sanchez WERE the best option, but neither would be worth the 3rd overall pick. Neither would last to our 2nd either, and we needed a QB. The value we got...is outstanding, the value the Patriots got, was outstanding. Good deal for both teams.

Chiefs got a QB and LB they dearly need. The QB, young with potential. Who can compete with another young QB with potential. As for the LB, he brings LB help, helps usher in the Patriots culture, and brings his wisdom. Good pickups.

The Patriots got something for an older LB who probably wouldn't be around too much longer anyway. A win. They upgraded their investment of a 7th round pick to a 2nd rounder, and they cleared room under the salary cap. Which they dearly need.

You're right. Cassel's a failure. Stafford's a failure, so is Sanchez. We shouldn't even acquire a QB because he won't be Tom Brady. The horror.

That's the beauty of this. All these people who've been saying we MUST acquire a QB because that's what winning teams do, and making fun of everyone who was "afraid" of taking a calculated risk on a QB are now the ones "afraid" because the QB we took a risk on is not the one they propped up for the last several months.

The irony is fantastic.

This was Cassel's first year, how can you compare a rookie to a veteran dude?.

If you remember a lot of people thought trading off Drew Bledsoe and keeping a then, really an unproven Brady was a bad move.

Pump the brakes, slow down buddy. Greatest QB of all time?

On another note, I find the people on here acting as if the sky is falling hysterical. Turn on the TV, go read any blog or anything else football related and they are all saying this was a good deal for the Chiefs. But, once again, the QB at #3 or bust crowd is coming unglued. Good stuff.

I'd rather have Everette Brown than Curry. Not that he'd be any less of a reach, but if we want a rushbacker, then we should probably draft a rushbacker instead of trying to covert a coverage linebacker.
