Where would you draft a K that could do this??

Talking about Medlock got me thinking about a discussion I once had. Let's say there's a K available who will kick touchbacks 65% of the time, and will hit 75% accuracy from 65 yards.

Where does a prospect like that rate for you?

It's not easy to find a kicker with the supernatural ability of our hypothetical kicker. No way he'd get out of the first round.

With the current salary structure of the draft I agree....

However, K's score, and a K that gives you an advantage over every team in the league by making your offense need 20 less yards on every possession..???

Think about how many times a game your team punts between your own 45 and the other teams 40. Now add 3 points at least 75% of the time.

If he hits an NFL record kick 75% percent of the time, you would think he would be drafted pretty early. No one up to this point has kicked 65 yards in a game. Also, much less chance of a bust...a kick is a kick no matter what team you're against. Weather may vary, but that's no indictment on the kicker.

I'd do a 2nd rd pick on him. On a side note I saw the Air Force Academy kicker put one through the uprights on a kick-off last fall. He did have about a 30mph tail wind but that's the only time I've ever seen that done.

I just dont like the idea of any kicker in round 1 no matter how good he is. Unless the talent in that draft the kicker is in, is horrible, he shouldnt be taken in the first. You can find kickers out of the draft or 6th, 7th round that are very good, dependable players. Plus if you took him in the first round you would be paying a kicker, first round money. I would never pay a player that is only on the field every 10 plays or so big money and make him the highest paid kicker in the game.

Some late round/undrafted kickers that come to mind....

David Akers; Undrafted
Rob Bironas; Undrafted
John Carney; Undrafted
Adam Vinatieri; Undrafted
Matt Stover; Round 12
Jeff Reed; Undrafted
Nick Lowery; Undrafted

1st pick overall.

The next question is what would you pay a #1 draft pick kicker?

You don't seem to realize the prospect you'd be drafting wouldn't just be a great kicker, he wouldn't just be the best, he would be the best by a MILE. and he would give your team a unique advantage over every other team. No way he makes it to the bottom quarter of the first.

I would only consider it, if that 75 percent was somewhere around 90. He would also have to make between 95-98 percent from anywhere inside 55 yards. Then and only then would I use a valuable 1st round pick on a kicker. Drafting a kicker in the 1st makes it to were you cant take a "talent" player early. The guys that get you downfield to even give the kicker a chance is the talented guys. Without them, the kicker doesnt even get a chance to do anything.

You wouldn't draft a K that will give you an advantage over every team in the league in the 1st, but you'll draft an ILB at 3?

It will give your team an advantage to a certain point. A kicker isnt a guy that can lead your team and have the guys rally around him. He isnt the attitude of the game. I like Curry because he brings so many different aspects to the game. Hes a true leader. Hes not just any ILB. Hes better than just any ILB. If he was just some ILB that I thought would be a good fill in guy, I would not even think about it. Curry is different from most of the ILB's in the league. He will be in the same category are the Ray Lewis', Patrick Willis' of the NFL within 2 to 3 years. Kicker in the first is just a bad idea, unless, like I said he can punt also and do it very well. If he can kick, punt, and save yourself a roster spot and be very good at it, then hell yeah I would take him in the late 1st.

A stud kicker will score more points by himself than any other single player on the team. A lockdown kicker is INFINITELY more valuable than a guy like Curry.

The K-ball doesn't travel nearly as far as the college ball.

Think about how many times a game your team punts between your own 45 and the other teams 40. Now add 3 points at least 75% of the time.
Here's the problem. Even if you assume 75% of the time is in ALL conditions (because if it's just a generic 75% of the time, then I gotta assume he's a dome guy, and he ain't kicking no 75% from your own 45 in New England or Green Bay in January), then 25% of the time you're setting the other team up on your own 45. Chances that the other guys get at least 3 are very high, and 7 aren't that bad.

Don't get me wrong, he's the greatest kicker ever, but even that guy is NOT a HOF QB or RB in terms of his impact on the game.
