Vrabel Good influence or not?
Mike Vrabel explained away his absence from all Chiefs voluntary workouts by saying he was "just trying to exercise my rights within the (CBA)" and that the practices were not mandatory for players.
Still, both parties would've been much better off had Vrabel attended. He's supposed to be the leader of new coordinator Clancy Pendergast's hybrid defense and is out of Bill Belichick's system for the first time this decade. Source: Associated Press http://www.rotoworld.com/Content/home_NFL.aspx |

You people wanna' talk about "getting paid" and "collecting a check"? Meet Mike Vrabel. As it stands today, LJ has more clout than this mother****er IMO.

Vrabel is nothing more than our Willie Mcginnest when he followed Crennel to Cleveland.
He will help alot with in game adjustments and the transition to the 3-4 and the transition for our ends to linebackers to be more specific. It sucks he isnt there to help in those respects right now, but real football is played and practiced in pads and the bulk of the learning will be done in camp. I doubt Vrabel is here past this year though, unless we somehow miraculously make the playoffs this year. He was on the last year of his contract for NE and the way they were strapped for cash, it wouldnt have been surprising if he had been released if they hadnt traded him. |

The guy has always been a player to be respected when it comes to performance. To me though, let his ass go in this Chiefs scenario. The CBA stuff is crap given the situation. If he was pissed about getting treated poorly by NE, then he should have came in here to be a leader ASAP. He could stay in shape, learn what is going on, and prove his point. I don't think he has a point left to prove other than he can still sign one last round of checks. He better dominate in camp, or I say cut his ass.

No, he's not a good influence. Haley and Pioli want guys who think football is crucially important, and that'd be reflected in them, you know, actually turning up when the vast majority of everyone else on the team does.
Zach Thomas, Bobby Engram, Tamba Hali, Alfonso Boone, Mike Goff -- those guys are good influences. |

At least he's been with Pioli before and I'm sure he knows what is required as far as showing up in shape and ready to practice once TC comes. I would have liked seeing him here for the "optional' train-up sessions but too much is being read into this. I think he's too much of a pro to half-ass it when he gets here. Somebody said he's on his last year of a contract. If that is true he'll bust ass to get 1 more decent contract or if he's mentally "thru" then he'll call it quits. I think alot depends on what the defense is looking like. He doesn't want to go out riding on a 31 or 32 defense but if he sees some promise then I see him liking the challenge of helping building a decent D from scratch.

I'd bet that almost everyone here knows who David Whitmore is.

Eh, what he's doing now isn't optimal. Pioli/Haley want guys that will show up every day. That's been pretty public. It's also been public that they seem to be making an exception for him. Look at the verbiage they use for Waters compared to Vrabel.
Bottom line, it would be better if he were here, but it's hard to tell how important it is that he's here now. |

I think Vrabel was much more of a player in NE than what Whitmore was in SF. And I'm guessing he will out do Whitmore in KC also.

"But the Chiefs’ bigger problem is that their best offensive lineman, four-time Pro Bowl guard Brian Waters, hasn’t made it clear he’ll play in Kansas City this season, and that leaves a gaping hole in a unit that couldn’t afford even a small hiccup."
"Waters, the Chiefs’ only remaining 2008 Pro Bowler, said he always skips voluntary workouts. He said that he hadn’t performed much conditioning work before the minicamp, and he indicated that he was uncertain about what might happen during the three months before the Chiefs’ regular-season opener." "What the Chiefs don’t want is to begin another season leaning on a patchwork and aging group of linemen, particularly when the team is spending nearly $15 million to find out whether Matt Cassel can be its long-term quarterback."
