The All Things St. Joseph Thread
I know many of you are already planning your 2010 summer trip to our wonderful city. I think we need a repository of all things St. Joseph from the locals. From hotels to restaurants to things to do or see, let's gather it all here and then for the next 5 years you'll all have some place to look before you plan your travels.
Doesn't have to be St. Joe either, can be the near vicinity. Of course we can't list everything to do in Elwood, otherwise this will just get a bit out of control. So with that said, you guys throw out your thoughts/ suggestions, and I'll try and update the initial post and link to your reviews of certain restaurants, find links to the places you mention and try and post everything here in some kind of comprehenisble fashion. Places to Stay:
Things to Do:
Places to Eat:
Bars/ Nightlife:

I'm in Flagstaff I haven't been to Tucson yet but hear it's pretty cool from my girlfriend.
My parents are gonna tape all the Chiefs games for me or I will go nuts. I don't have DirecTV yet and probably won't until later.

that's not entirely true, places like 36th Street and Galvin's are pushing the $20 mark...

.. And that's about it.
Although we could talk forever of inbreeding as it's a staple of the city. |

http://www.stjomo.com/historic_homes.aspx 2. World class? I'm not so sure, but there are some fantastic restaurants specific to St. Joe. Many people traveling in to see family enjoy coming back to eat at these establishments, like Barbosa's, the Hoof and Horn, Galvin's and a handful of other great places to eat. 3. There used to be a waterfall at Krug Park, but it's all but dried up. Still a beautiful park with a pond and lots of ducks and geese. King Hill lookout and Wyeth Park are overlooks above the city and suounding area and provide great scenic views. Bluff Woods conservation area is a great place to visit in the fall, but might not provide much for viewing in the summer month of August. 4. Would Indian artifacts count? There's a nice collection at the recently built Remington Nature Center. The Native Americans are a lost civilization, simply because the English settlers simply murdered most of them upon settling in North America. 5. There are no longer bears in Northwest Missouri, unfortunately. There's a stuffed bear at the Nature Center though 6. I think there is some sort of society established in town that focuses on video gaming. I'm not that familiar with it. Slightly related, there are various civil war reenactments that take place throughout the area spread throughout the year. 7. umm, I guess the closest would be the Ramada Inn with a newly built indoor water park. However, I've heard it isn't the quitest place to settle in for the night. 8. see the King Hill lookout and Wyeth Park viewing areas referenced above. 9. There are a lot of great museums in the area. Not sure anything you request specifically, however we have the Glore Psychiatric Museum (old mental hospital turned museum), Remington Nature Center (displays on most of the native animals and native american, civil war and pony express memorabilia), Patee House Museum (an old motel turned museum, also the place the Pony Express was operated out of, lots of Jesse James and Pony Express history), the Pony Express Museum (old pony express stables with memorabilia from that period), Miliary Heritage Museum, and a couple other museums I'm not mentioning. 10. Mardi Gras parade

Ok I'll start with the first restaurant review:
Barbosa's Castillo Wonderful Mexican food, just not the typical Tex-Mex you might expect. Everything is cooked using flour tortillas, their tacos are delicious, light, crips deep-fried using flour tortillas. My favorite dish would be the Posk Burrito, rice, refried beans and their signature Pork Chili in a flour torilla smothered with Nacho Cheese sauce. The Chicken nachos are also killer, tortilla chips are also flour.

Don't forget the crappy casino in town! (I haven't actually been to the new one... so I shouldn't judge yet)

I think we would have a very solid list established rather quickly, if everyone from the area or familiar with the area, would take the time to list their favorite thing in town to do, their favorite place in town to eat, and maybe their favorite place to stay or where they would stay (for the locals) if they lived somewhere else and were in town visiting.
Then we'll have a solid list to look at, and can start plugging in some of the holes.

Barbosa's (already listed), D&G(closed), Bucket Shop(closed) and Galvins To stay... Holiday Inn downtown, Ramada Inn, Shakespear Chateau B&B To do... That is hard to say... I would recommend the Glore, Krug Park and check out some of the architecture around town.. i.e. Twin Spires etc (I would also go to Cool Crest if it is still open just for childhood memories) |

yes, that's the point. County and City have both given funds to the facility in anticipation of tourism dollars. I'm not sure practices inside the "indoor practice bubble" will be open simply because there may not be enough room, but I've heard it said that the Chiefs plan to practice out in the open as much as feasibly possible.
