What makes you a Matt Cassel fan next season?

What does he have to do to convince you he is worth the starting spot? I won't say worth the $ cause I don't think that will ever happen but, that being said....

2-20 on passes over 30 yards.

62/154 for a 40% completion percentage.

20% of his passing yardage came from passes originating from behind the LOS.

70% of his passing yardage came from passes thrown 10 yards or less.

Those stats brought to you by BossChief and OTW.
So the guy completes 66% of his passes from BLOS-20 yards and we are complaining why?

cause he only chucked it past 30 20 times... in 16 games...

Of course, neither of those things will happen so I guess I'll settle for sucking enough that all future hope is cast aside and we (finally!) draft a legit QB prospect.
You do realize that the chance to draft a legit QB may be greater this draft than next? We are at #5 right now. We improve a couple three games next season and we are drafting 12-18 range, and chance of getting Locker are nil.

I disagree. The guy overthrew Moss routinely last year and overthrew lots of deep balls this year as well. He has the arm strength to do so, he just doesnt have the confidence. Confidencce is HUGE to a qbs play, it effeccts everything he does.

He may never be more than below average at it, but it wont be because he cant throw far enough. This is not saying that he didnt throw some passes that looked like punts, he surely did. It is saying that he also threw some nice ones and a good qb coach will take his strengths and emphasize them, I think Charlie will get him where he needs to be mentally to be much improved.

The td pass to Catille was a thing of beauty. How do you explain that pass if he doesn't have the arm strength?

I dont expect it to happen overnight.

this

Some of you have no idea what its like to get murdered to get a pass to a catchable spot only to have it dropped. It makes you stop trusting that receiver as much next time and to look elsewhere. Unfortunately for us, EVERYONE was dropping passes last year and that makes it harder to fairly judge anyone that was throwing the passes.

Take away half of those drops and his completion percentage jumps to 60% and his passes over 10 yards jump to 40% (Tom Brady this year was only at 45% with Moss to throw to and he is a HOF quality QB) I have faith that when he develops chemistry with his receivers and the oline is improved to give him some amount of consistency with his followthrough, along with the massive upgrade in coaching talent guiding his play..he will improve quite a bit.

Last year was like the perfect storm for a qb. No QB coach, no OC, below average line, crap receivers, half a year with a completely ineffective RB, record breaking dropped passes, rookie coaching staff, new offense installed a couple weeks before the regular season started...you get the picture.

Cassel may end up sucking the big fat one again, but there are reasons to be hopeful he may not suck as much.

How much better would Cassel be with that all star receiving corps? Literally speaking, their third receiver is better than anyone other than Bowe on our roster.

Give Aaron Rodgers our receivers and he might look awfully pedestrian.

Heres a link.

http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/player...644&sYear=2008

That is a link to his 08 stats broken down in MANY ways. This is the page that made me want NO PART of him pre-trade. If you want to, you can change the year to get this years breakdown and then crunch the #s yourself.

Very useful site.

We could easily draft top 6 or 8 in 2012 which should be enough to get a legit prospect.

Arm strength isn't about distance, it's about zip and velocity...the reason Cassel overthrows guys is because he throws that lollypop long pass which means his arm isn't strong.

I explain it as a 20-yard pass, which it was. It's not like that was exactly a rope.

If he has the arm strength to throw downfield convincingly, how do you explain the numerous "strikes" to Chambers?

You're hitting on what has IMO kept Cassel from looking as good as he can... Confidence, confidence in what is happening in front of him, confidence that his WR's will grab it more often than not.

His arm (wow i'm so sick of this phrase, yet true) 'is what it is'... but more time & continuity here will definitely help him make his throws with more 'zip' & decisiveness.

Can he be the guy $60 some mill should buy? based on pure arm talent, IMO NO, its impossible for me atleast, to argue that. But, more pieces in place, time & Confidence will boost his highly competitive nature & decision making IMO.

I could b*tch about not having a random Heyseuss .2 here as well, but Matt Cassel is here right now, for now i just want to help the guy...

what other choice is there?

I will be a Cassel fan becaue its not the "cool" thing to do...

So many freak out and nick pick everything from how he combs his hair to what knots he ties in cleats on game day...

So just be out of the norm and not follow the cool crowd.. I am rooting for Matt Cassel.

When you watch him look for how he overcompensates his follow through when he has to place the ball where it's "suppose" to be. He doesn't have a good foundation when he sets up to throw. Cassel swings his right rear leg like a center fielder during his windup as if he is straining to get the ball to the WR.
