What makes you a Matt Cassel fan next season?

What does he have to do to convince you he is worth the starting spot? I won't say worth the $ cause I don't think that will ever happen but, that being said....

The teams that are elite have an elite QB. Can anyone honestly say the Chiefs have an elite QB? Didn't think so.

I thought I read that Cassel had a chance to go other schools and start but he chose to stay at USC. He obviously has some talent but you're right we don't know what his ceiling is.

I really WANT to believe the guy is going to be good, or at least ok. But crap, I am far from an expert on QB play, and I see so many flaws.

The worst, he appears to have no natural presence in the pocket. Next, he is not accurate, anywhere. Short or long. He completes a lot of short passes, because the error is not magnified by the distance.

So, for him to make me a fan, just show some cool, just show some pocket presence. At least an improvement. He was no better at that in game 16, than he was in 2.

.
His accuracy last year was pretty good, especially for a 1st year starter. Comparing Cassel last year to Rodgers and Eli this year:

Cassel
Behind LOS: 85%
1-10 yards: 68%
11-20 yards: 46%
21-30 yards: 33%

Rodgers this year
Behind the LOS: 84%
1-10 yards: 72%
11-20 yards: 52%
21-30 yards: 32%

Eli this year
Behind the LOS: 74%
1-10 yards: 66%
11-20 yards: 52%
21-30 yards: 37%

Do you think an offensive line with a Roaf-like LT can make a QB go from great to elite?

You should combine all of the throws to paint a better picture.

Beyond 10 yards:

Cassel - 40%
Rodgers - 45%
Manning - 47%

Also:

Thigpen - 41%

Fine. Combine the throws. Considering the guy didn't start a single game in college or in the NFL, his completion % is still impressive.

His comp. % may be in the ballpark of those guys, but he doesn't hit his receivers in stride very often.

Rodgers puts on a clinic when he throws to his receivers. They catch the ball in stride and take if for more yards.

Cassel throws it high, low, and behind, basically negating any chance the receiver has to take it further.

I've read multiple times today that we're supposed to be hopeful because he's been a career backup. As if somehow Cassel's inability to get on the field since HS is a testament to his potential upside.

All I can say is...

What made anyone a Trent Green fan after 2001?

Matt Cassel had a terrible year where the first half of the season the entire offense was totally abysmal...and the second half of the season the offense improved dramatically and Cassel's play was still sporadic at best...

What makes me a fan? I think bringing in a guy like Weis who has worked well with QB's...having a year of this system under his belt...and depending on what kind of players we bring in and how we draft and if we shore up the offensive line...

I really think we could see an improvement. Despite his deficiencies this year, I still think he showed what kind of competitor he was...tough kid who wants to do well...

Does that mean he will? Who knows...but unlike most, I'm not writing him off yet. Like Pioli/Haley...I promised I'd remain optimistic past this first year...regardless of the outcome...

Charlie Weis makes me a fan of Cassel next year. Cassels overall numbers suck but there are a few things he that were good like play action passes and roll outs. He'll benefit from a offensive cordinator and a QB coach.
