I can't watch that show anymore after knowing about the real Crane. There's a movie about him called auto focus I think? One weird dude...
Hard to find that series on tv anymore anyways.... I thought Dawson was dead? He's my fave all time game show host. Can u imagine a guy acting like a cad hosting a game show nowdays? Posted via Mobile Device |

I loved that show.
Thanks for posting it. Here is another interesting bit about the show that I found on this web site (along with a lot more information about the Jewish actors on the show). http://propagander.tripod.com/hh.html "The show was broadcast in West Germany for one week in 1974 on the US Armed Forces Network, but the German Government strongly insisted on its immediate removal from the airways. Hogan's Heroes didn't reach Germany directly until the early 1990's. Initially titled Barbed Wire and Turning Tail (Stacheldraht und Fersengeld), it flopped. Eventually re-worked and run under the name A Cage of Heroes (Ein Käfig voller Helden), it became a smash hit. The German version is actually funnier by a good margin than the original English-language episodes. This is due to clever translations that make imaginative use of various German dialects and regional accents. The greeting 'Heil Hitler' in today's Germany is illegal, so when the characters give the party salute, the German voice-over says: 'How high is your corn?' They even managed to introduce a new (off-screen) character into the mix; Kalinke, Klink's mistress and personal maid." |

It must have been one hell of a pitch to the studio execs...

I have no desire to watch Auto Focus - the Biography Channel show on Crane was bad enough. I prefer to remember him as Colonel Hogan, not some perverted freak.
As for Hogan's Heroes - I liked it when I was a kid, but even then I wondered why all the Germans spoke English. |

I watched it in reruns as a kid. Loved it. I never knew Bob Crane played the drums on the theme song, funny because that's what stands out to me in the theme.

I just noticed something - in the clip in the title post, one of the extras is William Christopher (Father Mulcahy in M*A*S*H).

Christopher left the New York stage for Hollywood to attempt to gain work in television, where he guest-starred in several well-known series, including: The Andy Griffith Show (he portrayed a new, young doctor scheduling Opie Taylor for a tonsillectomy) and also as an IRS agent who came to collect taxes due from Aunt Bee (who had won some prizes on a TV show), Death Valley Days, The Patty Duke Show , The Men from Shiloh and Good Times (he portrayed the military doctor examining J. J. Evans). Christopher had recurring roles on Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C., That Girl and Hogan's Heroes. He also made a guest appearance on The Love Boat. In 1972, Christopher landed the role of Father Mulcahy in the television series M* A* S* H, when the actor who originated the role, George Morgan, was replaced after just one appearance in the pilot episode. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Christopher#Career |

HD Net showed "Autofocus" last year several times and I caught it twice. It's well acted and I highly recommend viewing, even if your not a Bob Crane fan. Greg Kinnear turns in a great performance as Bob and Wilhem Dafoe is also great.
Bob Crane died in the summer of '78, he was doing the dinner theater circuit in a play he had performed many times called 'Beginner's Luck'. I caught 'Beginner's Luck' with Bob at the Showboat Dinner Theater in St. Petersburg the summer of '77. It was a really funny play, just four actors, it was two couples and Bob's partner was a very buxom blond who, according to Autofocus, was one of his many romantic interests. He was really great in the play and came out afterwards for a Q and A session and then to the lobby for autographs and photos, very nice man to his fans. That's why it's so amazing he lead such a double life. |

Nice take Deep...
When did HH end? Early 70's? Interesting that the movie showed him washed up just a few years after Hogan.....I guess that happens to a lot of tv actors though....maybe if he had lived longer he would have made a comeback... Posted via Mobile Device |
