Albums from Agalloch or TV on the Radio are going to be looked at as all-time classics by critics and serious music aficionados. There's so much wonderful music out there. It is rarely mainstream viable but that doesn't in any way mean that it isn't good or artistically valuable.

Rhetorically you absolutely did say that good music is mainstream music (insofar as one can agree that music played on radio/applicable future format in 20 years will be apart of the mainstream). You used that point to disagree with my assertion that the '00s had "good, valuable" music that came from it.
Agreed. Also keep in mind that mainstram isn't what mainstream used to be. Clear channel has completely bastardized radio. Djs play the same music station by station based on mandate instead of what they want. Sirius and xm let's people listen to more variety. Frankly, I think indie music is stronger than I've ever seen it.

And I agree. Todays music isn't overly movie made for movies. But there are plenty that will stick around for a while. Radiohead will be remembered as the father of the electronic age. Muse and kings of leon are indie bands that seem to be seeping into mainstream. I think we're finally seeing a divide between indie and pop. And I agree, dig deep and there are some really great indie bands that have talent and have very strong followings.

Radiohead was from the 90's, as was Muse. And Muse is hardly "indie", especially outside of the US.

Regardless, "Indie" bands aren't what's push mainstream movies, film and advertising.

More to the point, there isn't a Led Zeppelin, Who, Eagles, Beatles, Boston, Foreigner, AC/DC, Rolling Stones, Aerosmith, Guns 'N' Roses, David Bowie, Eagles, Doobie Brothers, Allmans, Foo Fighters, Journey, Iron Maiden, Kiss, Joe Satriani, Van Halen, Metallica, Pearl Jam, The Cars, The Wallflowers, Yes, ZZ Top or even a Stevie Ray Vaughn spurned from this decade.

It's been lackluster. There are very, very, very few bands and artists that will be around in five years that originated from this decade, let alone 20 years.

I like the killers, but I'm not sure they have much staying power (and I wouldn't put them on that list, ftr).

There were a lot of bands around the beginning of the decade like The Killers, Franz Ferdinand, Panic at the Disco, etc. that captured the imagination of 80's clubbers and some kids as well.

But that's died out because their subsequent albums were weak.

Are you kidding?

Fallout Boy is broken up and their appeal was mainly to teenage girls at the top of the decade. They steadily declined in popularity and sales.

And I seriously, SERIOUSLY doubt that a "Screamo" band is going to be relevant when you're 60 years old.

Had a teenaged daughter during their peak time, goober. Thankfully they have gotten to experience real artist thanks to all the 80's hair bands touring over the last 3 years. They have seen guys like Warren demartini, George lynch, etc. Along with some of the great singers and bands of that time. All of them live.

That's cool. It's too bad George has regressed so much from his earlier days. He attributes it to the nonsensical weightlifting but I think that PED's have played a part. It's sad, really.

Warren's been a great player since he was 19 but he's never stepped outside of Ratt or grown as a guitarist or artist. It was a natural ability that he never nourished or grew.

Warren, IMO, really screwed up in 2003 when John Kalodner, then head of CBS Sony wanted to sign him, Blotz, Crane and Lynch Mob singer Robert Mason to a HUGE deal because their songs were killer, but they REFUSED to relinquish the name of Ratt.

So, Sony passed.

Dumb, dumb, dumb, dumb, dumb.

My oldest has become a big fan of Franz Ferdinand and Arctic Monkeys. I don't really care for their music though.

The best thing to come out of this decade musically for me is Dethklok and I seriously doubt I'm going to be listening to Dethklok 15 years from now. Or Zero 7 but I don't think count since they started in '99. Again, dunno if I'll be listening to them 15 years from now.

Then it's up to you to introduce them to where they began.

Depeche Mode, Duran Duran, Oingo Boingo, Missing Persons, The Knack, Elvis Costello, Madness, UB40, The Police and especially, early U2.

Although a lot of these "new wave" bands rip off Muse.

I personally can't stand the Freddie Mercury/Opera-style singing but the music is great.
