Check this out: [8.4.2010 5792261] Notice of Copyright Infringement

Okay this is funny.. My son and I downloaded this movie about 3 months ago and watched it... Nice to see they are on top of things...

You're right, I'm not, I don't have time to spend sifting through 100 songs just to find one I like. As far as what I like, mostly classic style rock; Styx, Eric Clapton, Moody Blues, early REO Speedwagon, etc. I'm convinced there simply isn't that type of music being made today.

It's been lackluster. There are very, very, very few bands and artists that will be around in five years that originated from this decade, let alone 20 years.
Many of those bands didn't make it out of their own decade. The Wallflowers???? Do we need another Wallflowers?????

During the last 10 years, we've gotten KOL, The Kooks, The White Stripes, Raconteurs, Spoon, Ryan Adams, Silversun Pickups, The Gaslight Anthem, The Fratellis, MGMT, Arcade Fire, Airborn Toxic Event, Stereophonics, Arctic Monkeys and several other bands that could end up being classics. It's hard to have that legacy when they're new.

Personally, I can't stand some of the bands you named, but that's bound to happen with any list of musicians.

OK, that's not really my cup of tea, but I do like a lot of stuff Clapton has done over the years. You might like The Gaslight Anthem. They have a very "classic rock" sound that reminds me a lot of early Springsteen but better IMO.

I don't have as much time as I did when I was younger, but I listen to Sirius & that introduces me to a lot of new artists that I like.

It's about genres to a point...although I think for the most part people like what they grew up listening to. Music evolves, but generally someone's taste in music doesn't. Although I am curious to see if some of today's young people are still listening to the same hip-hop music when they're in their 40s.

would be quite interesting to explain that to you kids wouldnt....

At least we only had to explain lots of hairspray, sex, drugs (why they are bad) and broken hearts....

I couldnt imagine trying to explain to my kids or grandkids why it was cool to beat up women, shoot cops, sell drugs and respect... "you know waht I am saying?'

While you may not care for The Wallflowers, Jakob Dylan is a very respected musician and songwriter. Their breakthrough record can still be featured some of music's finest players, including Matt Chamberlain and on guitar, Mike Campbell.

And they have a new album coming out soon.

The White Stripes broke through in the 90's. As for the rest, longevity is something that's rarely experienced by any band. Any of those bands could break up tomorrow and even if they don't, it's tenuous at best to say that they'll have an excellent body of work when their careers are over.

That's not the point. The point is that those bands have stood the test of time. Their music saturates the airwaves to this day. Their music appears in commercials, films and television on a daily basis. Who can ever think of the last episode of the Sopranos without associating Journey with the final scene?

The bands I've listed have transcended time and trends. It's still relevant today. It's difficult to state that the bands you've listed will be mentioned in the same breath in 20 years.

Iron Maiden is still relevant today? Um, no. Most all of the bands you've listed struggle with that outside of classic riock stations.

The White Stripes debut was released in June 1999, but that certainly wasn't the CD that broke them. Either way, I say they still make the cut.

I actually like the Wallflowers.

It's just as easy to say that the bands I've listed will stand the test of time as it is to say they won't. Some will, some won't. They're still putting out great music.

But dane, to my previous pt, good bands can't breakthrough to the airwaves bc of radio conglomerates. The good news is you're seeing a growing gap between horrible mainstream pop like nickelback and popular indie bands like radiohead (while they were around in the 90s, they didn't reinvent themselves until the 2000s to the sound they have today). No, you will never hear of nickelback or fallout boy 5 years from now. I know where you're coming from. For 5 yrs, I went to blink 182, everclear, and kings of leon concerts and I hated them--they played right out of a script and the first two were embarrasingly bad live. I've really gotten into indie over the past year bc the bands are becoming better and the live shows are terrific.

But there are several really good indie bands that are getting huge followings and their music is getting better. Band of horses, the shins, the black keys, and the arcade fire immediately come to mind. other really talented older bands like spoon, modest mouse, and wilco are becoming insanely popular. These bands will never be mainstream, but I guarantee that they stand the test of time bc people don't watch these concerts bc they kind of like them. They watch bc they love and follow the band. As for translation to movies, there are plenty of movies that use indie sounds very well and I could easily see them continue to use the same sound. Check out any of those bands--terrific music. I'd also say that music has shifted from musicians shredding solos. Its built more on interesting guitar riffs and hooks, and experimental sound--you should see some of the crazy instruments the arcade fire uses. Takes talent to make thos all work, but a totally different type of talent.

Is that all that different? I love led zeppelin and classic rock, but they're not mainstream popular. Instead, only people who appreciate music followed them and still do.

Great post. I'd like to point out that I don't think indie music has necessarily gotten better over the years as much as it's become more available over the last 10 years.

I was an indie musician throughout the '90s and we didn't have myspace, youtube, internet radio, satelite radio, or anything to get our music out. We had to beg people to come to our shows, book studio time & spend everything we had to have CDs printed. It was much more difficult to get our music out there & fewer bands were able to do it.

Now I can do it all in my office at my house. Record an entire CD, mix & master it, & burn several copies for friends. |The biggest difference is that there are so many more bands doing it these days because it's so easy.

The Strokes have some good stuff. They're a little punky for my taste, but I like them. I've never seen them live. I'll have to check them out.
