I think its time for the Cassel doubters to eat their crow

The kid deserves some respect.

After todays game Im starting to believe in the guy as our quarterback. He just displayed a true testament of toughness out there and leadership.

To some people I understand its about him leading us to the playoffs and winning the superbowl in order for them to be satisfied...yada yada yada

Im not going to go by that mindset at all. I look at this game and I see the way he played and it tells me a lot about his character. We should be proud. We got a pretty good quarterback folks. That 2nd round pick we gave up was well worth it.

I think composure, toughness, and leadership are key attributes for a quarterback. Cassel has those qualities and I also love the fact that he plays with passion too.

However, I believe the number one attribute as a quarterback is the ability to respond under pressure. So now I don't want to jump the gun here and say he has that capability, but I will say, after coming back from an appendectomy and performing the way he did, is a great sign and a step in the direction towards performing well under pressure. So far so good Matt. Keep up the good work you sure as heck got my support.

No you are right. He did not "have" to make a play in the 4th quarter. He did however "have" to make a play in the 2nd quarter, and he did. Defense had been on the field nearly the entire first 2 quarters, and had somehow held the Rams to 6 points. Offense had to make a statement... or game possibly slips away. Cassel more than made some plays to back up his defense.

But I disagree with your definition of a game manager, as if that's a bad thing. In most of the Steelers' best years, Big Ben was below 3,500 yards. And Dilfer was a guy who had as many INTs as he did TDs.

It's only the NFC West, but it's not accurate to say that the Cassel who beat Arizona, Seattle, and St. Louis is Trent Dilfer. The Chiefs won each of these games largely due to Cassel, not in spite of him.
Ummm.. It's Arizona, Seattle and St. Louis. These aren't exactly stellar teams.

Like I said, it was a winning effort. I'm just not gonna crown his ass over it, y'know?

I still believe that they should have opened that game up for Brodie last week and let him throw the ball down the field. They gave him no time and nothing but short route pass plays, playing to a stacked box.

Finally, they opened up the offense a little in the second quarter. That's just coaching
Not sure which 1st quarter you're talking about, Brodie or Cassel. But Brodie's lack of short throws were mostly by choice, not design (apart from the first series). He checked down to receivers before he gave his receivers a real chance to get open. And on longer pass plays, he showed he couldn't be trusted to handle the protection--we really saw today how much a QB can make a difference in terms of avoiding a sack.

If we're talking about today, two of the drives were killed not because of a conservative pass play but because the receiver completely failed to secure a catchable pass.

I wasn't really referring to stats. However, I actually liked Trent Dilfer. The dude won a superbowl, not screaming talent. But I was just making a reference to the comparison of a franchise guy vs. a game manager. I think that Big Ben has averaged over 3500 yards for his career hasn't he? I haven't looked it up, but will. Anyway, I see your point

I think it was smart coaching too. You have a guy comming off of surgery 12 days ago. Conservative is the way to go early IMO. Defense came to play today after that first drive. Kudos all around... except for that ST's coach. He could use a kick in the ass.

I probably know 1,000th what you do about football, but I guarantee you that I know 1,000 times more about people than you. There's no doubt watching that game today that Cassel is a leader. His teammates responded to that leadership.

It's not a one game crowning. If you can not see what Cassel means to this team, you are not looking. He is to us what Manning is to the Colts.

And no, I did not compare him to Manning.

That's all well and good. But he deserves a lot more credit during the second half of the season than calling him Trent Dilfer. Today was a classic example. Regardless of how bad the Rams are, they put a ton of pressure on him in the pocket and the running game was so-so. He absolutely won this game for the Chiefs even when his offensive teammates did everything in their power to lose it.

I understand that he needs to beat better competition. I'm not totally sold on him yet either. But to say he's merely been a game manager or Trent Dilfer does not jive with what's actually been going of late with Cassel.

I was talking about today.... After the first series, they looked like they were going to revert back the run, run, pass trend. St. Louis was stacking the box. I just knew the only way that our run was going to open up was if we at least threatened down field. Then I thought overall, they did a very good job. Cassel included. I thought he was very gutsy today and I was more impressed than ever.

But last week, the offensive line sucked...seriously, the worst of all year. It's like they were discouraged before the first snap. My confidence in Brodie did suffer a serious blow last week as well. But I don't agree. I thought the play calling was rediculous, they should have opened it up regardless.

In my opinion, when I look at the first half for Croyle, the protection wasn't all that bad. He had one sack on a completely blown protection. In several instances throughout the game, he stood like a statue in the pocket as the edge collapsed on him. That was the one enormous difference I noticed with Cassel today. I thought the pass protection today was every bit as bad as last week. But he's getting a hell of a lot better recognizing the hot route and his pocket presence today was magnificent--there were at least 5 plays where he escaped a sack and gave himself the opportunity to make a positive play out of it.

Chiefsplanet is such a reactionary message board. I am as happy as anyone with the way Cassel is playing, but he has to do it for more than a few weeks, and against better competition than the teams we have been playing. No, the schedule isn't his fault, but it is still something that has to be accounted for. Is Cassel up to it? We'll just have to wait and see, but this idea that you have to jump on the bandwagon right ****ing now is horseshit.

Sometimes a more measured approach is necessary. If we accept that Cassel's abortion of a 2009 campaign was not enough to make him a shitty QB, then surely one month of solid play isn't enough to make him a franchise quarterback. Many of us want to see Cassel keep this up, but against better competition and when it REALLY counts, in the playoffs.
