Question about fouls in basketball

I understand that a shooting foul will be called on a defensive player if he makes contact with an offensive player while in the act of shooting.

Now, how in the hell is it legal for an offensive player to fake a shot, then launch himself sideways into the defending player while "putting up a shot" and get the call? No ****ing different than a soccer player flopping to get a call.

I'm half watching the TT vs MU game and a TT player just pulled that off. Got 3 free throws for jumping 4 feet to his left to be fouled by the defensive player.

I've heard stories like that, but I think it's a myth. No one can produce any evidence.

The dumbest rule when it comes to free throw shooting is when a player is shooting 1 and 1 in college. I get that when it's in the act of shooting and the field goal isn't scored. That's obviously a situation where you shoot two foul shots. But all those instances where the player has to shoot 1 and 1. I never know when they happen or why. It just seems reeruned. They should move to every foul is two free throws unless the field goal is made in the act of shooting or it's a foul in the act of shooting a 3.

It's quite simple really. Every half they count team fouls, and when a team fouls for the 7th time (provided it's a non-shooting foul), the other team gets a 1 and 1. This is called a bonus situation and remains the same for team fouls 8 and 9. When a team fouls for the 10th time in a half, the other team simply gets two shots. This is a double bonus situation.

Basically, the rule is in place to provide an incentive not to foul on defense too often.

There's no rule that says you have to jump straight up to shoot a shot.

But there is a rule that says that if the defender has established position, it should be called a charge on the offensive player. I agree with the thread starter, its BS when its called. I didn't see the play in question, though. So I don't know if that one was obvious. Reggie Miller used to do that and it was such ridiculous garbage. And it takes away from the quality of the game giving guys cheap crap like that, IMO.

Don't leave your feet, and you won't get called for the foul.

Oh, I was under the impression that we were talking about a stationary defender. You're correct if he left his feet, he deserved to get called for the foul. Its still cheap, though.

It doesn't get called that often, slightly less than once per games nationwide I bet.

The only time i've seen it called is when a defender leaves their feet - which you shouldn't do in that situation anyways.

Basketball rules: The referee can make up any rule at any time or not call an obvious foul at his/her discretion. Typically, referees are encouraged to invent calls that benefit superstars, teams with large followings, or home teams.

Pullen does this move well. Pump fake, defender jumps to put hand in the face, then jump into the defender while throwing up a wild shot. He nailed a KU defender in the last meeting.

He was set up to shoot a three - defender came running at him and jumped to block the shot - and he jumped into him getting the foul, even though the KU defender would have went right by him with no contact.

It's a dumb rule...especially when no contact would be made if the offensive player wasn't initiating the contact. It's called correctly, but it's a dumb rule.

This is the worst thing about how the game is played today. I've never understood why players are allowed to take two full steps while driving in for a layup, yet if a player picks up the ball when not driving, he has to keep a planted foot down and can't take a single step at all.
