Pullen Named a Wooden All-American The senior becomes just the third Wildcat to earn recognition to the team Senior Jacob Pullen earned his fifth All-American award on Wednesday with inclusion on the John R. Wooden squad. March 30, 2011 MANHATTAN, Kan. – Senior Jacob Pullen continued to add to his trophy case on Wednesday, as he was one of 10 players named to the 2011 John R. Wooden Award All-American team by the Los Angeles Athletic Club. Pullen becomes the third Wildcat to earn All-American honors from the John R. Wooden Award and the first since Michael Beasley in 2008. The school’s first Wooden All-America honor came to Rolando Blackman in 1981. It marks the fifth All-America accolade for Pullen, who has been named to the third team by The Associated Press, The Sporting News and Yahoo! Sports and the fourth team by FOXSports.com this season. He was selected Tuesday as the 2011 winner of the Frances Pomeroy Naismith Award, which is given to the nation’s top senior, six-foot and under, by the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. Pullen was joined on the Wooden All-America squad by Jimmer Fredette (BYU), Ben Hansbrough (Notre Dame), JaJuan Johnson (Purdue), Kawhi Leonard (San Diego State), Marcus Morris (Kansas), Nolan Smith (Duke), Jared Sullinger (Ohio State), Kemba Walker (Connecticut) and Derrick Williams (Arizona). Voters for the All-American team included nearly 1,000 members of the media who cover college basketball. They were asked to account player performance during the regular season and postseason through the Elite Eight as well as a player’s character and academic performance. Each player on the team had to prove they were making progress toward graduation and maintained at least a cumulative 2.0 GPA. The top-5 men’s vote-getters will be invited to Los Angeles for the April 8 announcement of the 2011 John R. Wooden Award winner as the college basketball player of the year. The presentation of the trophy will be made as part of the Wooden Award Gala at 6 p.m. PDT that day. The school’s all-time leading scorer with 2,132 points, Pullen led the Wildcats in 12 statistical categories, including scoring (20.2 ppg.), double-figure scoring games (29), field goals (191), 3-point field goals (74), free throws (170), assists (115), steals (49) and minutes (32.6 mpg.). He led the school to a 23-11 overall record, including a tie for third place in Big 12 play with a 10-6 mark, and the third round of the NCAA Tournament. |
