**Official MU Head Coach Search Thread**

Seems like this deserves its own thread. The news will start coming fast over the next week or two, IMO. Recruiting is a 365-day event and we can't afford to be rudderless for long.

My vote - Cuonzo Martin.

Discuss.

I've seen a couple of boards where people keep trying to pinpoint Kim Anderson as the next Coach...why? All it would be is an extension of Norm Stewart IMO.

Will we play the waiting game that could cost us a quality guy? Alden has never been all that good at playing "poker" when negotiating.

And why would Cuonzo Martin want to go to a school that is most assuredly facing some pretty rough sanctions thanks to their old coach?

Likely job security with great pay during those years. Built in excuse.

This changes nothing for Mizzou.

There are multiple issues within the Purdue basketball program, including: 1) Lack of financial support from the AD, who believes in low base salaries with incentive packages attached; 2) Intense local competition, increasing from Butler; 3) Intense entrance requirements; 4) bad blood between the AD and Painter based on the contentious contract negotiations last year and lack of pay for assistants.

These reasons - and probably a few others - are why Painter reached out to Mizzou through common contacts to express interest. Months ago.

This isn't a play for a pay increase. And at this point, the money families at Mizzou are taking the pay range into an area Purdue probably won't match.

There's no guarantee Purdue would've went after Martin anyways.

I think they'll go after Weber or Lavin.

or Stallings, etc.

The idea that Cuonzo Martin is the only possible heir apparent to Painter at Purdue is silly.

really? what is Painter's connection to Mizzou, that would have lead him to begin laying groundwork to come there months ago, long before Anderson was ever hinted at leaving.....I'm curious.

There are quite a few articles out there on the Post-Dispatch and Star websites that provide details if you are interested. But the quick summary is he has many area contacts, primarily on the St. Louis side, from his 6 years at SIU. His wife is also from the southern Illinois area.

It's not so much "what are Painter's contacts w/MU" but rather "why would he reach out to MU MONTHS ago"?

That just seems so bizarre. How did that go down?

The John Pelphrey Death Watch begins in Fayetteville, people begin assuming that Mike Anderson will be the top choice to replace him, Painter thinks, "Hmmm, I'm not totally happy here at my alma mater, MU might be an opportunity ..." So his peeps contact MU and say, "Look, if the job happens to open up at the end of the season, he'd really be interested in it."

?

It does seem odd. One of the articles seemed to indicate that Painter or Painter's agent had some sort of relationship with Alden at Mizzou (friend of a friend or something like that)....odder things have happened...if Mizzou does get Painter, it is going to be obvious that Mizzou knew more of what Anderson was thinking and what was going on than we have given them credit for.

For all we know, Alden began putting feelers out a year ago after suitcase mike openly flirted with Oregon.

Say what you want about Alden, but the man is not stupid. He could have been preparing for anderson bolting for awhile now.
