***Official Chiefs Visit/Workout/Met Thread***
It stands to reason that we will select players that we have met with, hosted for a visit, and/or had them work out for us. Why would you draft someone without setting up a meeting or talking with them? Obviously we won't be able to track phone calls, private meetings, etc... but we may as well list what we do know.
I know that ArrowheadPride keeps a really solid list in table format, but I haven't seen it updated since January. I figured we could start compiling that info here as well, even if its just borrowed from other websites like AP and PFT, among others. I will edit this post when someone posts updated info. PFT's list: http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com...kouts-tracker/ Kansas City Chiefs as of 4/16/11

Interesting that the Chiefs have been bringing in several RBs. You know Charles is secure as the number 1 RB. Todd has talked glowingly of Jones. Battle, Cox, and Castille are free agents but the guys they've been bringing in are about Thomas Jones size and speed. I guess you can never have enough good RBs in the NFL. They need at least 3.

Taiwan Jones tore up the big sky conference. Except Montana State. But yea, highly regarded division two talent.

Kind of an interesting statement. They ate together and they found no problems. As defensive lineman in the NFL do you want them to fight over the last pork chop? Even though he's not a true NT at 6'4" 315 lbs, I could see Wilkerson being a Pioli type player. I say he's not a true NT because he played tackle in a 4 -3 and then when they moved to the 3 -4, he played DE. |

I attempted to organize this list to try and draw some conclusions. This is assuming that NFL pre-draft visitors has some type of meaning when it comes to the draft. Also noticed that there were more than 30, so does that mean that the former rules don’t apply, the list is wrong, or some of these guys count as local, so they do not apply to the 30 count? I think if a player is from the area or went to school in the area, they are considered local and don’t count against the limit.
So what kind of guesses could you make by looking at this list of Chiefs pre-draft visitors? 1. The Chiefs will draft a QB. There were 5 QBs going from rd 1 to 7. It seems that at some point the Chiefs will pull the trigger on a QB to be drafted. 2. KC brought in a lot of offensive linemen. Conclusion, the Chiefs will draft an offensive lineman and probably two. Surprisingly one of them looks to be a 3rd round guard. Three guys were brought in that will be guards drafted in the 3rd or 4th round. If the Chiefs draft a 3rd round guard, what does that mean for current guards? 3. The WR position has 6 guys on the list. They range in the round that they would be picked. I think that means they will add a WR at some point in the draft. 4. Outside linebacker went from 1st round to FA. My conclusion, if they don’t draft a guy in the first they go with players on the current roster like Andy Studebaker and add some college free agents. 5. All of the RB visitors lead me to believe that a running back will also be taken somewhere in the middle of the draft. 6. A DT will also be taken but all of the defensive ends, leads one to think they might also go there in the draft. If that happens it would seem Shaun Smith might be gone. 7. The free safety visitors make you think they might want to draft one and maybe push Lewis to a back up role. 8. Tight end is not a priority but maybe if a special player like TE Luke Stocker fell to the Chiefs in the right draft round, they could draft him. 1. Colin Kaepernik QB Nevada Rd 1 - 2 2. Andy Dalton QB TCU Rd 2 - 3 3. Pat Devlin QB Delaware Rd 4 – 5 4. Nathan Enderle QB Idaho Rd 7 5. T.J. Yates QB North Carolina 7 - FA 6. Justin Houston OLB Georgia Rd 1 7. Aldon Smith OLB/DE Missouri Rd 1 8. Brian Smith LB Notre Dame FA 9. Justin Trattou OLB Florida FA 10. Anthony Castonzo OT Boston College Rd 1 11. Tyron Smith OT USC Rd 1 12. Jah Reid OT Central Florida Rd 5 - 6 13. Will Rackley G Lehigh Rd 3 14. Jason Pinkston OT/G Pittsburgh Rd 3-4 15. Stephen Schilling G Michigan Rd 3 – 4 16. Mike Pouncey C/G Florida Rd 1 17. Kris O’Dowd C USC Rd 3-4 18. Phil Taylor DT Baylor Rd 1 - 2 19. Muhammad Wilkerson DT Temple Rd 1 20. Jerrel Powe DT Ole Miss Rd 2 – 3 21. Christian Ballard DE Iowa Rd 2 22. Cameron Jordan DE California Rd 1 23. Jamal Greene DE Kansas FA 24. Taiwan Jones RB Eastern Michigan Rd 3 - 4 25. Ryan Williams RB Virginia Tech Rd 2 – 3 26. Bilal Powell RB Louisville Rd 5 27. Ryan Taylor FB North Carolina FA 28. Leonard Hankerson WR Miami Rd 1 - 2 29. Edmond Gates WR Abilene Christian Rd 3 30. Dwayne Harris WR East Carolina Rd 5-6 32. Jarred Fayson WR Illinois FA 33. Terrence McCrae WR Ohio FA 34. David Leonard WR Wyoming FA 35. Chris Culver FS South Carolina Rd 4 36. Quinton Carter FS Oklahoma Rd 2 - 3 37. Chris Randle CB Utah State FA 38. Prince Amukamara CB Nebraska Rd 1 39. Luke Stocker TE Tennessee Rd 2 |

I've listed the players that the Chiefs have reportedly shown interest in through a variety of ways: Hosted for a visit, Had a private workout with; Had dinner with, Spent time checking out via Pro day; Interest via media reports; etc...
Suffice it to say this list isn't "only" guys we've hosted for a visit.

My guess is that we will look to fill immediate holes at the beginning, and back fill with quality talent from then on.
Here is my assessment of team needs, in order of severity: CRITICAL NEED 1. Starting Caliber WR (Literally no one outside of Bowe) 2. Starting Caliber Center (if Weigmann retires, and if they don't plan on moving Asamoah to C) 3. Starting Caliber Nose Tackle (Smith may not return, Edwards is not a starter) SERIOUS NEED 1. Future Starting Caliber OLB (Studebaker can start until grooming is done) 2. WR depth (We have zero depth at this position. The cupboard is bare.) 3. QB depth (Brodie's all but gone, Palko sucks, a prospect back up is needed) NEED 1. RT depth (Someone to push Barry Richardson) 2. Safety depth (Mcgraw is old and slow, and he's our last real option) 3. RB depth (Jones wears down as the season goes on, and we have to have production outside of JC in terms of short yardage/goal line situations. Dexter will help slightly on the speed back plays) WANT 1. Inside Linebacker to put next to DJ. (An upgrade would be nice) 2. A second Starter Caliber TE (Think New England. Also, Moeaki could go down at any given time) 3. A second prospect at Guard (Having Asamoah is nice, having another would be twice as nice. Waters is getting old, and Lilja is no spring chicken.) I think we are 13 players (2 Drafts/Free Agencies) away from having a "complete team" assuming everyone plays to their potential. If Cassel starts regressing, it could be 4 years until we are a complete, perennial SB contending team built for longevity. We are on the right path, I'd like to think. Hopefully we have another home run draft class!

I kinda hope we pursue Taiwan Jones. I think he's got the goods. I've watched him a fair bit, albeit against inferior competition...

According to Josh Buchanan of JBScouting.com Lehigh offensive lineman Will Rackley is lining up a number of visits and private workouts. He’ll be one of the busiest prospects over the next month, as he meets with the Browns, Cowboys, Rams, Chiefs, Dolphins, Lions, Jaguars, Patriots and Jets. Rackley played left tackle in college but is probably best suited for guard at the next level. That said, his potential versatility certainly gives his stock an extra boost.

I'm going to throw out some additional ideas on this. No one get all mad but I'll put some of the names in here from the list of players KC is reported to be interested in. I think your number 1 "critical need" priority, WR, should be taken care of in free agency, maybe a Steve Breaston. The number 2 in your "serious need" WR, should be taken care of in the draft. Doing that allows the drafted WR a little time to develop. (1st round) Leonard Hankerson WR Miami Bringing back Casey Wiegmann for one more year would also allow us to draft and develop a center. That would take care of your number 2 "critical need". (4th round) Kris O’Dowd C USC The number 3 "critical need" Nose Tackle should also be taken care of with a free agent signing plus a draft pick. I still think there will be a free agency this year. I know a lot of people are really down on Ron Edwards but if we brought him back and he splits time with a drafted rookie, it could really strengthen our defensive line. (3rd round) Jerrel Powe DT Ole Miss Your number 1 "serious need" OLB I think is already on the team in Andy Studebaker or Cameron Sheffield. I think we give them a try and see what they can do. The number 3 "serious need" QB...the Chiefs have talked with QBs in the draft from 1st round down...surely somewhere this year they draft one. (2nd round) Colin Kaepernik QB Nevada NEED 1. RT depth (5th round) Jah Reid OT Central Florida 2. Safety depth - sign ? FA to work with young secondary. 3. RB depth - (5th round) Bilal Powell RB Louisville and Ryan Taylor FB North Carolina FA WANT 1. Inside Linebacker - I think Javon Belcher and Micah Johnson handle this. 2. A second Starter Caliber TE - sign free agent Bo Scaife 3. A second prospect at Guard - Give Waters, Lilja, Asamoah, and Harris one more year. The WR position now becomes a strength with Bowe, Breaston and Hankerson. I could go on but you can look at the list and see what these moves would do to improve the Chiefs. |

Hankerson that early is a reach. Kaepernik that late probably not going to happen. There are other centers I'd take before O'Dowd in the 4th but he was the only center from the list to pick from in the middle rounds.

To think we will be able to knock it all down in one season, and have it be a success built for longevity, is a lot of hoping. I'd be happy to cross 3 of our 6 Critical/Serious Needs off the list, and 3 of our 6 Need/Wants off the list this year. That would mean batting +500 in the draft, and having 2 solid FA pickups, and possibly 3 additional pick ups for depth needs/special teams. If anyone can do it, its Scotty-too-hottie.
