Hali is pretty much probable to questionable in half of the games he plays. A lot of it seems to be his foot. He seems to play well through the pain, but clearly, would be nice to be 3-deep so that you don't make him feel like he has to play through pain weak after weak.

On the LOLBs... we have no idea if we have the right LOLBs. We have a third round guy who apparently everybody missed out on 3 times and a LOLB who has pretty much proven he's quality depth at best in Studebaker. Don't get me wrong, I'm perfectly comfortable walking into the season with Houston. But he definitely has huge boom/bust potential.

I think we're a little too comfortable in our pass rush to think Hali is the only pass rusher we need on this defense. We forget that there were often major stretches of a game where Hali would disappear, and there were plenty of games where we weren't even sniffing the Quarterback. And for as good as our secondary is, they don't force enough turnovers as they could and that's because there aren't a bunch of games where QBs look nervous to be in the pocket. Man, you put an elite pass rusher opposite Hali, and the QB has nowhere to go and I can guarantee you our ballhawk secondary are going to double the INTs. Maybe Houston is that guy, but maybe he isn't. I'd rather not take that chance because I'll tell you what, a good Nose Tackle (say Aubrayo Franklin) makes this defense top 10. A good Nose Tackle and a good LOLB make this defense top 3.

1) all players play through pain. Its part of the game.

2) what games did we not get a pass rush in? It could always get better, but it was good every week. Hali never disappeared. Ever. He just got held every play. Houston should get around 8 sacks and balance the pass rush and enable Hali to take the next step in his career.

I think Hali can get 18-20 sacks if things fall into place next year and we add a good NT.

If you watch tape of Houston and Woodley, you will see somewhat similar players...Woodley being better against the run.

Are you serious? Hope this was intentional or due to lack of sleep...

What? He was a consensus first round talent! The only reason he fell was b/c of a fail drop at the combine. Also, as far as pass rush goes, that is what Houston does, it's who he is, a pass rusher. If you want to question his ability, question his run stopping ability.

Or his ability to drop back in a zone.

This isn't a conventional 3-4. The idea at OLB is RANGE. What can you do?

Can I move you to MLB on 3rd down? Can I move you to DE/RushEnd? Can you cover a slow HB/FB in the flat?

This is why I love our current DC.

It's not about fitting people into places it's about getting good people and finding places for them...

I purposely point to Hali because he is probably put on the probable/questionable list more than most players with consistent starting records. He seems to have some kind of foot problem, because it always seems to be the culprit. No, it's not something I see as career threatening, but clearly the guy could use a snap or two off every once in a while.

A good NT is going to help Hali. But it doesn't do you any good if the QB is free to roll to the right every time. Houston could help, but then again, maybe not.

As for our pass rush, definitely several games. Hali is a good pass rusher, but I don't know that anyone would really call him elite. He's a guy who gets amazing production in spurts, and then disappears in others. San Diego had their way with us on pass offense their two games, and Oakland wasn't scared of our pass rush either. And it's no secret that our 3rd down pass defense is atrocious, and that's not because we have bad players in the secondary. Some of that is because Hali doesn't have any kind of help. A Nose Tackle is going to help push the pocket into the QB, but it doesn't change the fact that the next best pass rusher outside of Hali last year was our nickel corner. Our 3 D-linemen aren't pass rushers. Our 2 ILBs are adequate at the very best. We're basically relying on Houston to pick up the slack.

Next year, we dont' have the benefit of rolling over the NFC West and a bunch of bottom-feeders. I'm more worried about consistently getting a pass rush on guys like Philip Rivers. I think even if we walk in with vast improvement from a Nose Tackle, if Houston is anything short of "good", top QBs could easily walk over us.

This is not accurate at all.

Our pass rush was very good against the Raiders in both games.

Hali had 3.5 sacks against the Raiders and the Chiefs had 8.

Calling Hali anything but elite is absurd. He had a lot of sacks and was the TOP PASS RUSHER IN THE LEAGUE according to PFF:

http://www.profootballfocus.com/blog...-edge-rushers/

I do agree that Hali needs help but with Wallace Gilberry out there and good blitzers like Berry and DJ, if Houston turns into an 8-sack guy our pass rush will be awesome. There is no need to spend a 1st.

If you'll recall, the Raiders threw at us at will in the second half of the first Raiders game and we were never in the game the second time around. Hali's a very good OLB, but he's nowhere near the same level as DeMarcus Ware or a James Harrison. I don't see him command the same kind of attention as those guys. He's a very good OLB, but he's not the kind that can do it alone. Not consistently at least.

We need another pass rusher. It's not a good sign when the next best pass rushers are in our secondary (Berry/Arenas). DJ and belcher aren't good pass rushers. And none of our front 3 are either (Gilberry is solid in specific situations). If Houston can be an 8-sack guy and consistently get into the backfield and force the QB to stay put, then great. I think there's an okay chance he could. But that's a lot of faith to put in a 3rd round pick. Without a second pass rush threat, we're doomed to be the same defense that shows flashes of brilliance and then has other games where we make a backup Jaguars QB look like he belongs in the Super Bowl.

Save OL, WR, and QB the Raiders pretty much have more talent at almost every position.

They're held back by their $hitty QB and line (that can run block, but pass blocks for $#it.)

And coaching.

Like the Chargers...

I know its all rumors right now, but Ive heard it mentioned a couple places that more than one team has contacted Gilberry.

Pretty sure we tendered him at a 2nd round pick, so if the talk is true and someone signs him we get a second rounder, right?
